Refuse Chute
# Refuse chute is a mean of transporting waste materials by
chute (duct) , from the point of disposal in high rise residential
or office building to a diffuse collection room at the base of
the chute.
# Applications - Originally was installed in hospitals and hotels for
the vertical movement of waste and bagged soiled linen.

Refuse Chute …
Can be installed in –
• Residential, commercial buildings and malls.
• In any duct, common lobbies, landings, staircase mid-landings, utility
ducts, dry balconies and kitchens.
• If on floor level, Intake Hoppers shall be at every floor level
• If at mid-landing, Intake Hopper shall be at alternate floor level.

Refuse Chute … Advantages
• Facilitates total building garbage collection at one single
point.
• Garbage disposal with ease & utmost hygiene.
• Reduces Power consumption.
• "Dry" & "Wet" garbage separate collection possible.
• Reduces manpower.
• Diameter of chute used –
 Residential – 450 – 600 ø
 Commercial – 600 ø
 Malls/hotels/hospitals – 750 ø

Refuse Chute … Intake Hoopers …
• Top opening, bottom pivoted hopper for Garbage chute
• Fire rating should comply with National Building Code 2005, clause
3.4.8.3.
• Constructed of Stainless Steel. Fiber, Plastic chutes are not allowed
considering fire hazard or reaction to probable acidic waste.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 9

Refuse Chute … Intake Hoopers …
• Chute shall directly discharge into trolley, collection bin or
compactor.
• Available in plastics / galvanized steel.
• Std. capacity: - 240 / 330 / 660 / 770 / 1100 liters.
• Diversion shall not to be allowed.
• Discharge end shall have a fire cut off door.
• Standard response fire sprinklers of 68o
C are provided inside the
chute.

TRAPS
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 11
Traps…
• Traps are an important component of a plumbing system fitted at the
end of soil pipes or waste pipes to stop insects and vermin and foul
gasses (odour) coming out of the soil pipe or waste pipe into the
buildings.
• It is developed or designed such that it retains a small quantity of
waste water from the discharge of fitting to which it is attached as a
barrier to prevent foul gasses or air entering the building.
• Traps shall be of self-cleansing design with uniform bore and shall not
be dependent on internal partitions or other movable parts for
retention of water seal.
• They should generate enough velocity from the available flow to
have a self-cleansing effect with a smooth finish.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 12
Traps…
• Some manufactured fixtures, e.g. water closets, bed pan washers
and certain models of urinals have integral traps built within the body
of the fixture.
• Diameter of the trap shall in no case be smaller than the diameter of
the outlet of the fixture to which it is connected.
• Connection of a trap into another trap should not be practiced.
• Diameter of outlet pipe from a floor trap shall not be less than size of
the trap outlet.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 13
Different types of traps
Nahani Trap or Floor Trap
• Provided in the floor to collect waste water
from bathroom, wash area, washbasin, and
kitchen sink etc.
• Nahani Trap is provided to prevent the foul
gasses entering into the building by providing
a water seal of minimum depth of 50 mm.
• Floor traps are available in PVC, UPVC and CI;
they are without vent pipe but removable
grating is provided at the top of Traps.
• Nahani traps are a source of major leakages
due to their poor design, casting and poor
quality.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 14
Different types of traps
Gully Trap
• A gully trap is provided outside the building
before connecting it to external sewerage
line.
• It prevents the foul gases entering in to the
building by providing water seal. It has
deep water seal of minimum 50 mm depth
and it also prevents entry of bugs and
insects from sewer line to waste water
pipes.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 15
Different types of traps
Gully Trap
• The total depth of gully trap shall not be less
than 30 cm. with a minimum depth of water
seal of 50 mm.
• Each gully trap shall have one cast iron
grating 15 cm x 15 cm and it must be
embedded in cement concrete foundation
properly and housed in a brick masonry
chamber.
• Chamber must be well plastered and one
water and air tight C.I cover fixed over
frame 30 cm X 30 cm inside dimensions.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 16
Different types of traps
‘P’ , ‘Q’ , and ‘S’ Trap
• P, Q, and S traps are classified according to their shape.
• They essentially consist of U – Tube which retains water acting as seal
between the foul gas and atmosphere.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 17
Different types of traps
Intercepting Trap
• Intercepting trap is provided in to the
Interceptor Manhole (Interceptor Chamber).
• An Interceptor manhole is provided at the
intercept of building sewer and Public sewer.
• Intercepting trap is provided to prevent the
foul gases from public sewers entering in to
the building sewer by providing water seal of
100 mm.
• It has an opening at the top called the
cleaning eye/Plunge shaft having a tight plug
for cleaning the trap.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 18
Different types of traps
Bottle Trap
• A bottle trap is provided to receive waste from washbasin, kitchen sinks and
other appliances where the appliances do not have built-in it trap.
02-Jul-17 Rameez R. Gazi, Dept. of Architecture 19
