Question
• Why do different services show different numbers/citations?
• A: they are looking at different sets of journals, articles and
data
• Crossref will include things that other databases do not (and

Other?
• OJS are working with Crossref on a tool to help deposit
references
• We hope it will be available from OJS v3.2
• At the moment, you would need to use one of the methods
above or export from OJS and add your references into the
XML
• A full Cited-by plug in was available for earlier versions of
OJS. We hope to revive it soon.
`Three strategies for retrieving cited-by data
1) Periodically come and get the latest data, then update your pages
3) Come and get the data on the fly when a user has asked to see it
• In all cases you make HTTP requests to get the data
• In #1 and #2 you have to store the results
2) For each DOI come and get the data once, and enable alerts
`
Periodically get the data
http://doi.crossref.org/servlet/getForwardLinks?usr=<username>
&pwd=<password>&doi=<doi>
&startDate=<startDate>&endDate=<endDate>&date=<single
day>
• The DOI would be just a prefix, in which case ‘date’ must be provided
• These requests can return VERY large responses
Example:
http://doi.crossref.org/servlet/getForwardLinks?
Usr=***&pwd=***&doi=10.1067&date=2011-05-10
`
`
Periodically get the data
http://oai.crossref.org/OAIHandler?verb=ListRecords&usr=<usernam
e>&pwd=<password>
&set=J:<prefix>:<journalID>
&from=YYYY-MM-DD&until=YYYY-MM-DD
&metadataPrefix=cr_citedby
• These requests can return VERY large responses
Example:
http://oai.crossref.org/OAIHandler?verb=ListRecords&usr=bioone&pwd=****
&set=J:10.2981:60810&metadataPrefix=cr_citedby
`

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Search for Crossref DOIs for your reference lists. Not all references will have a DOI, some may have a DOI from another registration agency. A reader is then able to click on the DOI and be taken to the article or landing page of the article
  • #7 You may also use the Simple Text Query form that we men
  • #9 It’s the opposite of reference linking. This shows links to the Crossref articles that cite, or have references to an article.
  • #13 From PLOS
  • #14 In order to make this work you have to deposit your references in the metadata you send to crossref. If every member does this we will build a comprehensive citation database for all of scholarly communications.
  • #16 Explain that whilst the copyeditor could look at each reference and search online, there is a better way to find the DOIs, provided by Crossref. The first step is to go to the online site, and click on the Simple Text Query link. NB: you must check this online before doing this presentation, in case Crossref has changed the links !!
  • #17 This screenshot shows the three key points: enter the registered email: check the box asking for PubMed IDs (for biomedical journals), and finally, paste in the references for which you would like the Crossref DOIs returned. Then, finally, click on the submit box and wait
  • #27 Bigger DB than say Scopus/WoS - so you may find different matches.
  • #28 Any questions?
