2. About me
Hi, I am Najko and work as a Data Analyst at the SUB Göttingen
My Role:
Design and implement new services for analysing scholarly
communication to support researchers, and to inform decision-making
Particular focus on open data and open tools to access, discover and
analyse metadata about scholarly works
3. How I work
Figure from H. Wickham & G. Grolemund, 2017. R for Data Science. Boston.
4. How I work and where Crossref helps!

5. Import using Crossref REST API
Free to use!
API is well-documented and metadata frequently updated
Comprehensive query and filter option
Facet counts
Great performance when using the polite pool (sharing email with Crossref)
Great tools to facilitate access to the API provided by Scott Chamberlain
(@sckottie)
7. Tidy metadata
DOIs allows interlinking with other webservices and databases
Comprehensive metadata
publisher and journal name disambiguation
License infos and full-text availability
IDs (ISSN, ORCID, Funder DOIs)
Content Negotiation
export to reference managers (BibTeX, citeproc-json)
formatted reference list
Matching free-text references to DOIs
9. Communication
Permissive re-use conditions are key for effective dissemination!
Crossref asserts no claims of ownership to individual items of
bibliographic metadata and associated Digital Object Identifiers
(DOIs)
Allows to openly share datasets along with the analysis, or even to
build analytical applications using Crossref metadata
11. Challenge: Studying Hybrid OA uptake
Many publisher offer hybrid
open access models
However, determining the
number and proportion of OA
articles provided immediately
in open access by
subscription-based journals is
hard!
12. Data-driven definition hybrid open access
Academic institutions sponsored open access publication
according to the Open APC initiative
Publishers shared licensing information about fulltext
accessibility and re-use rights with Crossref
17. Summary: Benefits using Crossref
Crossref services helps to obtain, tidy and communicate
metadata about scholarly work!
Open API
Open Tools to work with Crossref metadata
DOIs make it easy to interlink various data sources
Provides comprehensive metadata serving many use cases
Permissive re-use of metadata
Builds a community around open metadata
Many publishers offer hybrid open access journals (Suber 2012).
However, because of non-standardised reporting practices, it is hard to keep track of how many articles were provided immediately in open access by these journals, and to what extent these figures relate to the overall article volume published
In particular, it is challenging to determine subscription-based journals that already did publish open access articles,
as well as to obtain proper licensing information about access and re-use rights (Laakso and Björk 2016; Piwowar et al. 2017).
Very excited to see that Crossref encourages publsihers to share rich metadata
Practically, Participant reports
Strategically by playing an active role in the metadata 2020 intiative
