Mass Edu Data Challenge - Kick-off & Data Divecscranto
The Mass EduData Challenge - a six week “data challenge” - has launched! The event focuses on elementary and secondary school education - a top priority in Massachusetts. Schools in the Commonwealth’s 351 towns and cities annually generate over 75,000 new graduates, providing crucial skills for young people, and driving a fundamental investment in the Commonwealth’s 21st century workforce and economy.
This, the first-ever data challenge from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) seeks to improve understandings of DESE’s historical data and identify new and valuable patterns and insights to help inform education policy and increase public engagement with the Commonwealth’s education data. Participants are encouraged to (i) generate analyses and visualizations to better illustrate identified patterns, and (ii) to develop their own unique “lens” through which to analyze the data by choosing to focus on new relationships between data sets or by bringing in external data for comparison.
The six-week data challenge launched on May 28th and will close on July 8th with an awards ceremony event at hack/reduce in Cambridge, MA.. There are four prize categories: Best Use of Data [prize: $1,500 & a Google Nexus Tablet], Most Visually Compelling [$1,500 & a Google Nexus Tablet], Crowd Favorite [$1,000 & a Google Nexus Tablet] and Collaborative Data Contribution [$500].
This data challenge is driven through the Governor’s Mass Big Data Initiative and is organized in partnership with DESE, the Office of the Government Innovation Officer of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and hack/reduce. Industry sponsors include HubSpot, Socrata and LearnLaunch.
Participants can register for the Mass EduData Challenge as a team or as an individual by visiting https://www.hackerleague.org/hackathons/mass-edudata-challenge and anyone can view the submissions as they come in and cast their vote for the data challenge winners.
Whether you’re competing in the challenge or watching the developers’ progress, it’s sure to be an exciting six weeks!

Crossref Community Webinar - Asia Pacific 12-14-2016Crossref
Hello, we recently asked our members in Asia Pacific which subjects they’d most like to hear about, and you chose:
* DOI Display guidelines: Ed Pentz, Executive Director, will talk through our new recommendations and show examples of both good and not-so-good practices.
* New metadata deposit tool: Jennifer Lin, Product Director, will share details (and a sneak preview) of the new Crossref tool for publishers to manually register and update content
* How to distribute your references: Ed Pentz, Executive Director, will describe why and how publishers might share references using Crossref.
We look forward to talking.
What does success look like when it comes to library discoverability? Index based discovery systems have seen a dramatic rate of adoption since introduction to the research ecosystem in 2009, with more than 9,000 libraries relying on a discovery system to provide users with a comprehensive index to their offerings. Some issues bar the way to providing this comprehensive view, but many challenges have been overcome through collaboration between libraries, content providers and discovery partners. The NISO ODI initiative began to examine these issues in 2011, and released a best practice in June 2014.
Speakers will highlight examples of successful collaboration, note continued areas of challenge, and provide insight on how the Open Discovery Initiative Conformance Checklists can be used as a mechanism to evaluate content provider or discovery provider conformance with the best practice.
Understanding how two University Libraries (Edinburgh and St Andrews) have responded to requests for supporting a journal hosting service for the institution – why, how and future sustainability. We will also describe how it fits in with our Open Access support services.

Crossers is not just about DOIs! not define by a particular service but by how we fit into the scholarly community as a whole
6 Truths we uphold at Crossref. Read slide. 1. Collaboration is at the core of everything we do. Our focus is on things that are best achieved by working together. We involve the community through active working groups and committees, board of directors made up of member, events like this.. 2. All types of publishers. Large commercial, small not for profit, univ, gov’t, library.. 3. Members decide our board.
4, We do R&D to support and expand the shared infrastructure we run for the scholarly community. We create open source tools and services to help our members solve problems and meet best publishing practice.
5. Our broad and inclusive community may have different views, but when it comes to law and policy, Crossref remains impartial.
6. We are obsessed with persistence - of links, of our technology, and of the organization. Membership and service fees cover our costs, and our surplus means we can do new things and sustain the community infrastructure for the long term.

our membership is really growing outside the US and Western Europe which is where our first members came from. We’re seeing a new type of audience with different needs and we need to have conversations to figure out what those needs and how we can meet them. Increased collaboration with OJS is one of those ways.
Since 1st Jan 2016 (until 31st October 2017) we have had 3260 new members join from around the world. The largest areas in terms of growth of new members are in the Asia-Pacific and Eastern Europe, with nearly half of all new members coming from these regions.
Non-profit = 993 (nearly one 3rd)
Small publishers (with 50 DOI’s registered or less) = 1515 (around half) or 1931 with 100 or less.
