Panelist with Michael Twidale and Lisa Hinchliffe in a workshop event called "Managing Your Digital Footprint as a Scholar." I spoke about the landscape of online profiles available to scholars, particularly emphasizing the ORCID identifier.
Your Work is Distinctive, What about Your Name?ORCID, Inc
This document summarizes a presentation given by Laurel Haak on ORCID identifiers. ORCID aims to uniquely identify researchers and link them to their work, such as publications, datasets, and grants. It discusses how ORCID identifiers can be integrated into author workflows and research systems. Over 160 organizations from different sectors have joined ORCID as members. Usage of ORCID is growing internationally, with over 1 million identifiers issued. The presentation outlines how different stakeholders like universities, funders, and repositories can connect with ORCID to link researcher profiles with their systems and activities.
Crossref's newest member of the content family is preprints. At Crossref, preprints have custom support to make sure that, links to these publications persist over time, they are connected to the full history of the shared research results and the citation record is clear and up-to-date. But that's not the whole story, and we have three guest speakers lined up to share their thoughts and expertise on the role of preprints in research; Martyn Rittman from Preprints, operated by MDPI, Richard Sever from bioRxiv and Jessica Polka from ASAPbio.
2014 CrossRef Workshops: Support Update and Multiple Resolution OverviewCrossref
The document discusses CrossRef's multiple resolution feature, which allows a single DOI to resolve to multiple URLs. It describes how a primary depositor can work with secondary depositors to set up multiple resolution for a DOI. The primary depositor notifies CrossRef and uses a flag to unlock the DOI for secondary depositors. Secondary depositors then submit their URL mappings which get added to the DOI resolution.
ORCID Update & Other Researcher Identifiers (2011 Annual Meeting)Crossref
The document discusses ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), a nonprofit organization working to create a global registry of researcher identifiers and profiles. It notes that ORCID has over 275 participating organizations and aims to uniquely identify individual researchers and link them to their contributions, such as publications, datasets, and patents. The document outlines ORCID's 10 principles, key constituents, timeline and development progress, and compares ORCID to other researcher identification initiatives.

Not just Identifiers: Why Crossref DOIs are importantCrossref
DOIs enable persistent linking to a piece of content, and an easy way for a publisher to update this if/when the content moves. Enabling others to persistently link to a piece of scholarly content, including in reference lists for example, makes the content easier to find, cite, link, assess, and reuse.
In this webinar we cover:
- What DOIs are and how they work in combination with other metadata you can register at Crossref.
- What DOIs are not; we will debunk some myths and misconceptions about what a DOI can do.
- Who uses persistent identifiers and scholarly metadata, many more than you might expect!
Presented in English by Vanessa Fairhurst, Crossref Outreach Manager, in collaboration with ies Research. 19th August 2020.

The document discusses the use of social media and Web 2.0/3.0 technologies in scholarly communication. It notes that researchers are increasingly acting as both authors and readers due to new online tools. The document provides a brief overview of technologies like blogs, wikis, and social bookmarking/categorization. It suggests these tools could help researchers discover important information and help each other find what to read or not read. The document advocates experimenting with these technologies in scholarly contexts.
Crossref's ORCID Auto-Update allows publishers to deposit author ORCID IDs with article metadata. With authors' permission, Crossref will automatically post their works to their ORCID profile and update it with any future publications. This benefits authors by compiling their works in one place. Over 1.4 million works have been deposited with ORCIDs so far, with hundreds of thousands automatically updated on authors' profiles through this service.
It is important for publishers to update scholarly works to maintain trust in research. Crossmark provides a consistent way to show updates by embedding a button in HTML and PDF formats. This button displays additional publication information chosen by the publisher, including funding data, ORCIDs, and license information. It allows readers to easily access the most current version of content. Nearly 500 publishers are using Crossmark for over 5 million works, helping researchers cite updated information.

Crossref provides metadata for publishers that includes titles, author names, ISSNs/ISBNs, abstracts, references, funding information, license information, full-text URIs, updates/corrections, ORCID IDs, and peer review reports. People use Crossref metadata for search/discovery, funding tracking, author profiling tools, and collaborative writing tools. National libraries also use it for tracking open access publishing costs and negotiations with publishers. Crossref metadata helps make research more findable, citable, linked, assessable, and reusable.
Checking for originality: Crossref Similarity CheckCrossref
Similarity Check is a similarity screening service that checks submitted manuscripts against over 59 million publications from Crossref members, 105 million publications from other partners, and 60 billion web pages to generate a report for editors. Between October 2016 to October 2017, over 4.7 million manuscripts were screened using the iThenticate software. For publishers to use the service, they must register content and assign DOIs so it can be indexed in the Turnitin database. As-crawled URLs in DOI metadata are used by Turnitin's crawler to index content. Similarity reports help publishers look for issues like plagiarism, self-plagiarism, unattributed use of others' works, or misrepresentation. Publishers invest significant

Starting from scratch – building the perfect digital repositoryVioleta Ilik
By establishing a digital repository on the Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM), Northwestern University, Chicago campus, we anticipate to gain ability to create, share, and preserve attractive, functional, and citable digital collections and exhibits. Galter Health Sciences Library did not have a repository as of November 2014. In just a few moths we formed a small team that was charged at looking to select the most suitable open source platform for our digital repository software. We followed the National Library of Medicine master evaluation criteria by looking at various factors that included: functionality, scalability, extensibility, interoperability, ease of deployment, system security, system, physical environment, platform support, demonstrated successful deployments, system support, strength of development community, stability of development organization, and strength of technology roadmap for the future. These factors are important for our case considering the desire to connect the digital repository with another platform that was an essential piece in the big FSM picture – VIVO. VIVO is a linked data platform that serves as a researchers’ hub and which provides the names of researchers from academic institutions along with their research output, affiliation, research overview, service, background, researcher’s identities, teaching, and much more.
