At the University of Michigan Library, we recently launched a new library web site [www.lib.umich.edu] that strives to put the library's resources in the foreground while leaving the particular tools that manage and provide access to them in the background. The site, built on Drupal, VuFind, LibGuides, and Ex Libris's Metalib, integrates a range of library services without forcing the user to look in specialized interfaces for them. For example, a site search dynamically returns results from the catalog (including materials available through the HathiTrust), our ejournals and databases lists, our web site, research guides, and librarian subject specialists. Our more static browse pages highlight the best resources in each of these categories for our patrons.

If you are running a site that goes beyond the occasional blog post you'll need to consider how you are going to manage your content. Maybe some things can be done today, but other things may need weeks or months of forward planning.
I'll be talking about:
Demographics: who is your audience and why it is important to focus on market segments.
Mind mapping: where does your content fit within your site.
Planning your content in detail: does it fit the expectations of your audience?
Tracking your content: who will write it, what is its expected life span?
Time lines - how long will it take to: create the content, get permissions and clearances, does it need to coincide with another event?

VuFind is an open source discovery tool that provides a unified search interface for a library's catalog and other resources. VuFind crawls and indexes data from a library's ILS and other sources, and provides faceted searching and display of results. While originally built for Voyager libraries, it now supports other ILSs through custom drivers and is highly customizable. Many libraries have implemented VuFind locally to provide an enhanced discovery experience for users.
Usability Testing: A Brief Introduction for the Novice
