Glassmaking dates back 3500-4500 years. Glass is made from heating a batch of ingredients including silica sand, limestone, and soda ash to 2800 degrees Fahrenheit. Once melted and transparent, the glass is cooled to 180 degrees and formed. Recycling glass saves raw materials and reduces energy usage, water consumption, and air emissions compared to using raw materials. Certain contaminants like ceramics, plastics, and light bulbs can ruin an entire load of recycled glass.
