2. RTS has the honor to introduce a
person who symbolizes both
healing and artistic spirit in one
person – Kat Fasano-Nicotera, an
extraordinary woman, a skilled
dollmaker and also a gifted writer,
characterized by the spontaneity
and unaffectedness of her words.
Then we have Dr. Daniel
Tomasulo with us. The seasoned
psychologist and psychodrama
trainer will be offering advice on
all things healing/growing in the
Ask the Therapist column that

3. “Erwin A. Thompson: A
tough old bird shows
us how to fly”
Janet Grace Riehl
My father Erwin A. Thompson
has now made it to the rich old
age of 94. Frankly, after my
mother died in 2006, we
worried that he would follow
suit as so many husbands do.
But he decided to keep on
keeping on even though as he
says, “The old machine is
wearing out.” He could complain
of a dozen ailments. Instead, he
chooses to live full-out until he
drops.
4. “Little Victories”
Ken La Salle
Somewhere around my 42nd
birthday, I started trying to
accept whatever suffering came
with my life. And wouldn’t you
know it, right about that time, I
got laid off again! So, I decided
to use some of my new free time
to come to terms with things,
starting with myself.
5. “Healing Through Art
Therapy”
Kat Fasano-Nicotera
There was a new world patiently
waiting for me to give back what
was freely given to me. I’ve been
accused by some of being selfish
by choosing to move forward &
beyond the 12-step community,
warning me of relapse, betrayal,
doom, and gloom. Perhaps this
would be true if I weren’t so busy
living this exciting life that had
taken on a momentum of its own.
6. “Is Anyone Listening?”
Holli Kenley
We scratch our heads as we look
around in search of our family
members’ faces, each one buried
in a different piece of technology.
We seem to have no problem
voicing our opinions, our feelings
and thoughts, our needs, and our
desires. We send them out
whenever and however we want.
And in moments, or even
seconds, messages come flying
back at us. The cycle continues
and it is exhausting us; it is
depleting us.
7. “Parentification”
Heyward Ewart, III Children forced to endure
parental fighting or to witness
one parent being abused by the
other will suffer emotional
turmoil, including fearfulness,
becoming withdrawn (so that he
does not have to take sides), or
acting out as a behavior problem
in order to draw attention to
himself as a decoy and stop the
threatening struggle.
8. “Resilience and
Vulnerability in
Critical Situations”
George W. Doherty
Resilience and vulnerability
assessment is a process that is a
necessary component of effective
emergency management
planning. However, it is unlikely
that any assessment, or
community audit, will capture
every potential need or identify
every person who, in some
circumstance, may be exposed to
a risk or to the possibility of some
loss.
9. “Helping the
Homeless”
Jay S. Levy
The world of a person
experiencing homelessness is
fraught with challenges to one’s
safety and it is not unusual to
witness or experience violence.
Many homeless individuals avoid
the shelters due to fear for their
own safety or concerns around
their belongings being stolen.
However, there is a catch 22
because if you stay outside in
areas that either get exceedingly
cold or hot, you are at risk for
issues ranging from dehydration
and heat stroke to frostbite and
hypothermia.
