Golden Guide: Tips for Sensational Parents by Chynna Tamara Laird
In her seminal book Not Just Spirited: A Mom’s Sensational Journey With SPD (Loving Healing Press,
2009), Chynna T. Laird explores the issues relating parenting children with the Sensory Processing Disorder
(SPD). Here are some golden guidelines for parents whose children are suffering from the symptoms
characteristic of SPD.
• Empower yourself with knowledge: about SPD in general, about your child’s form of SPD specifically,
about treatment options and support.
• Learn and teach others about the seven sensory systems: tactile, auditory, gustatory, olfactory, visual,
vestibular, and proprioception.
• Connect with support networks, such as The SPD Foundation, Sensory Street, or SPD Canada.
Feel okay with the range of emotions you’ll experience raising a child with sensory needs.
Go beyond describing what’s wrong with your sensational child; see and help others see the whole child.
• Teach your child how to interact with the world through play, fun games, crafts, and activities. Focusing
on fun makes it less scary.
• Advocate for your child today so she can advocate for herself tomorrow. Answer questions, give
explanations, and offer information in a positive way so she’ll feel confident to do it on her own.
• Help the child accept his/her SPD part but also to see the other amazing things inside of him/her.
• Be patient, stay strong, trust your heart and, most importantly, listen to your gut during the Sensational
Journey.
