Recombinant human insulin was first produced in 1981 using recombinant DNA technology. The gene for human insulin was inserted into E. coli bacteria using a vector, which then produced human insulin. The recombinant human insulin, called Humulin, was produced by Eli Lily and consists of two amino acid chains linked by disulfide bonds, mimicking natural insulin. The recombinant insulin is purified from growth media containing minerals, glycerol, and trace elements by immobilized metal affinity chromatography.
