1. RECOGNITION OF SIMPLE SUGARS
Mariana Agudelo
Camilo Martínez
Valeria Montoya
Camila Rodríguez
1.INTRODUCTION
Monosaccharides are crystalline compounds soluble in water, sweet to taste and needs digestión in order to be absorbed into the blood stream, they may contain six or five carbons. Monosaccharides are the simplest form of carbohydrates, these are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, some examples of monosaccharides are glucose and fructose.
Disaccharides are crystalline,water-soluble,sweet to the taste, and must be digested to monosaccharides before they can be absorbed and used for energy, these are a combination of two monosaccharides joined by a glucose linkage, they are fast energy providers, some exapmples of disaccharides are maltose and sucrose.
Polysaccharides are not water-soluble and are not crystalline, they form colloidal suspensions instead of Solutions.they are not sweet and must be digested befote being absorbed, they are made up of few thousand monosaccharides joined together by a linkage of glucose, they store energy, and example of polysaccharides is starch.
Benedict`s test is a toxic solution that is used for recognition of simple sugars, this test is designed to see if one sugar is sweeter than another. For making the test the reagent must be added to a subtance soluted in water and then it must be placed in a water bath of 4 to 10 minutes, the change of color of the solutions represents the presence of sugars.
Sweetness is the amount of sweet that a compund has, for example monosaccharides and disaccharides have high levels of sweetness but polysaccharides do not have those levels of sweetness, substances that are monosaccharides and disaccharides can be recognized by benedicts test.
2.MATERIALS
Test tubes.
Unknown substance.
Benedicts reagent.
Water.
3.OBJECTIVES
Recognize simple sugars disolved in unknown solutions.
4.RESULTS
UnknownSweetnessBenedictsASweeterChanged colorBLittle bito f sugarChanged colorCMore aquousDid not changed color
5.PROCEDURE
Three unknown substances in three test tubes
Taste each substance for knowing the level of sweetness.Add five drops of Benedicts solution to theSubstance to be tested. Heat for five minutes each tube in a boilingwater bath.
6.CONCLUSIONS
Solution A is a monosaccharide, because when you taste it, you can notice that it is sweeter than he other substances andi t is water soluble, it is glucose.this substance changed its color during the water bath of the benedicts test.
Solution B is a disaccharide, because it is sweet to taste but it is not the sweeter, it is water soluble andi t is a combination os two monosaccharides it is maltose, this substance changed its color during the water bath of the benedicts test.
Solution C is a polysaccharide, because it is not sweet to the taste andi t is not crystalline, it was the unique solution that dis not changed its color in the water bath, it is starch.
7.BIBLIOGRAPHY
http://www.horton.ednet.ns.ca/staff/jfuller/selig/LABS/bio12/pdf/carbohydrates.pdf
