Continuing professional development - what, why, how?Emma Illingworth
A presentation that went with a workshop delivered as part of the programme for the New Professionals Day at the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)
Professional Development (PD) is quite simply a means of supporting people in the workplace to understand more about the environment in which they work, the job they do and how to do it better. It is an ongoing process throughout our working lives.
PD opportunities provide a means whereby we can keep in sync the changes, broaden our skills and be more effective in our work.

Professor Helen Marshall, Vice-Chancellor of University of Salford, delivered a keynote focused on delivering a better support of widening participation in Universities. Current agendas that seek to promote “widening participation” and the development of skilled as well as knowledgeable graduates mean that universities need to take a step back to re-examine and challenge traditional curriculum design and delivery models. This paper explores the current landscape and requirements such as modularisation, credits, learning outcomes and levels and how those support and/or constrain curriculum design and delivery that engages and develops students who come from backgrounds that are mixed in terms of previous educational experience, socio-economic class and cultural heritage. The central theme is to challenge perceptions that certain approaches to curriculum design and delivery are not possible because of these requirements.

Insha’allah: Co-Creating Positivity in Independent Language Learning through Coaching at CNA-Q
Presenters: Lonnie Croal and Larissa Thurlow, College of the North Atlantic-Qatar, Qatar
The Independent Learning Centre (ILC), housed within the Learning Commons at CNA-Q, is an environment in which learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and deepen their understanding of the learning process. This strategically located space is where autonomy is promoted and supported. The unique challenges of this educational context (high dependence of learners and low meta-cognitive awareness) are an opportunity for a framework of professional coaching. A pilot coaching project carried out over a 15 week semester with a diverse group of English as Foreign Language (EFL) students highlighted the benefits in addressing this gap. We wanted to demonstrate that a shift to coaching would: 1) result in students becoming autonomous and responsible for their learning 2) promote learner reflection at a deeper, more affective level 3) help to remove the stigma associated with receiving Language Support, which is viewed by many faculty and students as “remedial” help. • Would shifting to a coaching focus help reframe how the Language Support Centre and the ILC are viewed both by learners and faculty?
In this lightening talk we will reflect on the use of social media for learning, some of the
changes over the last decade and share the updated guidance to support how social media
can be used by students safely and appropriately to support their learning experience and
prepare them for employment.
A comparative sentiment analysis of human, Gary FisherSEDA
What role can generative AI, such as ChatGPT, play in producing academic content that can be taught to students? This session explores the results of a mixed-methods study
evaluating the comparative performance of human-generated and AI-generated educational materials. Through a mixture of psycholinguistic analysis of AI- and human-generated teaching content and a quantitative survey of their impact on students, we examine the capabilities and limitations of generative AI as a tool to deliver higher education.
What next for graduate attributes? Exploring institutional approaches to embe...SEDA
This workshop will explore the extent to which graduate attributes are actively promoted by universities as a way to embed employability within programmes of study. Attendees will be invited to share experiences and approaches to working with graduate attributes through a
range of discussions and activities. We will seek to collaboratively explore the importance of graduate attributes and the extent to which different HEIs recognize this, and consider what
the future holds for graduate attributes.
Mentoring Graduate Teaching Assistants, Thomas RodgersSEDA
Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) assume a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of
undergraduate education and influence student learning. Enabling GTAs to engage in
continuing professional development to enhance their teaching excellence is of utmost
importance. In this session, we will introduce the Mentoring Excellence program, designed to provide comprehensive support to GTAs as they undertake their application for Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
The Practical Skills Passport: supporting student lab skills and confidence p...SEDA
I will report on the design, implementation and impact of the Practical Skills Passport (PSP). Launched in academic year 21-22, the PSP is a series of lab skills support sessions that
aimed to increase student lab confidence post-lockdown.
Beyond belonging – building mattering into programme design, Rebecca HodgsonSEDA
Much focus is placed on belonging, but arguably what has more impact on student and staff wellbeing is knowing that we matter. 'Mattering' in higher education can be defined as
approaches and interventions which show that the university cares, and that students and
staff matter as individuals. This practical workshop will use a research-based framework and
evidence informed recommendations, providing participants with tools to design and manage programmes to enhance both student and staff experience.

Programme Leaders: co-creating support through community development, Neil FordSEDA
Programme Leaders increasingly play a critical role in the student learning experience and delivery of strategic education objectives. It is also well known that Programme Leaders face
significant challenges and often receive little support in their role. This participative workshop will investigate challenges and effective forms of development for Programme Leaders. Using examples from scoping research at the University of Southampton, participants will explore networks and communities of practice as effective forms of peer support.
Step up to presentations - the PPCP approach, Laura DyerSEDA
Presentations are a common means of communication worldwide with learners expected to engage to disseminate academic knowledge (Tsang, 2020). However, presentations
demands on students are little researched compared to written communication outputs
(Ducasse and Brown, 2023). This lightning talk will look at the complexities students need to
negotiate to communicate a successful presentation then introduce an adaptation to the
activity using the author's own theory - people, place, compassion, power or PPCP (Dyer, 2022).

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Recognise and articulate leadership in learning and teaching
1. Recognise and Articulate Leadership in Learning and Teaching
Julia Hope J.R.Hope@kent.ac.uk
Silvia Colaiacomo S.Colaiacomo@kent.ac.uk
2. By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:
➢identify a mentoring/coaching model to promote the articulation of leadership
➢identify features of leadership in their practice or the practice of others
➢identify potential applications of the GROW model for their practice and
institution
3. A mentoring/coaching model to promote the
articulation of leadership
In September 2017, the University of Kent gained accreditation from the
Higher Education Academy (HEA) to develop provision and assess Claims for
Senior Fellowship (D3) of the HEA through a mentoring approach using a
coaching technique.
The Route for Recognition for Experienced Staff (RRES) supports participants to
develop and enhance their professional practice, particularly educational
leadership.
The technique adopted with colleagues entailed a focused mentoring
conversation on their ‘leadership’ based on the GROW (Goals, Reality, Options
and Will) model (Whitmore, 2009).
4. We worked with colleagues across the university,
Senior Academic
One of the first things I did was to amend my CV to use the
SFHEA post-nominal letters, because I think it’s important,
particularly in a research-intensive environment, it’s important
to show that we value and that I personally value being a
Senior Fellow of the HEA.
Professional Services
I think I now have a perspective[which] has definitely given me
confidence and that confidence will help me take on more
responsibility and that responsibility will enhance learning and
teaching and leadership.
5. Identify features of leadership in their practice or
the practice of others.
Consider the values of the UKPSF in your role.
Goal How could you support your staff to meet increasing challenges in
HE/FE and to recognise how their leadership may enable them to
meet these challenges?
Reality. What are you experiencing? What have you already tried?
Options What are the obstacles in your way? What are your options?
Will What are/were your next steps, what could you do now based
on this?
6. Feedback
How did the exercise make you feel?
What did you notice about yourself?
Discuss!
