The document discusses rebuilding online communications for Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). It describes doing a content audit that revealed BNL's website was outdated, lacked strategy and compelling messages. Stakeholder interviews found the home page had too much information and the site lacked a vision. A content strategy was developed with templates, audiences and tasks. A new responsive website was created with a content management system to better facilitate two-way communication and showcase BNL's science and impact. The rebuild achieved the goal of replacing the old BNL.gov, but some users struggled with changes to familiar sections like the phone directory. Ongoing content updates and training are needed to support the new site.

GO BEYOND: STARE YOUR FEAR IN THE FACE AND BOLDLY GO FOR IT! [INBOUND 2014]HubSpot
Is fear holding you back from striving for your potential and living your life more fully? By sharing her terrifying yet exhilarating experience ziplining high above a downtown city block, Glenda demonstrates how to face your fear head on and going beyond to live a more fulfilling life. The goal is not to get you on a zipline (unless that's you're dying-to-but terrified-of thing), but rather that the next time you are wavering on the edge of an opportunity, you boldly go for it!
How real and transparent are we really? We as humans like to believe that we are real, that we share our best selves all the time. However, the truth is we often build up imaginary fences in both business and life. We let people see over the fence, we want them to know what we are doing and why. However, we keep them within distance. What fences are you building in your life? Are they keeping you from success and deeper relationships that could be giving your life greater joy and momentum?
LEVERAGING LARGE-SCALE HUMAN HISTORY TO PREDICT THE ECONOMIC FUTURE AND HEALT...HubSpot
“The past does not repeat itself, but it rhymes."- Mark Twain Although future events have unique circumstances, they typically follow familiar past patterns. Over the past few years, I devoted my life to the development of prediction techniques based on mining such patterns—inferring the first Cholera outbreak in Cuba in 130 years, genocide events and riots in Sudan. The algorithms I developed deal with the complexity of discovering such patterns by harvesting large-scale digital histories, social and real-time media and human web behavior, and augmenting them with human knowledge mined from the web, to deliver real-time estimations of the likelihood of future events. My recent efforts included applying such methods in order to predict events in the economy, which will be described in this talk.

For the majority of chemists driven to share their data openly Jean-Claude (JC) Bradley will forever be the father of Open Notebook Science (ONS). Having coined the term in 2006 JC spent the next few years working to educate us in the ONS philosophy, developing tools, systems and even games for the community. This presentation will provide an overview of JC’s contributions to Open Notebook Science by examining some of the various projects that he conducted with his students and collaboratively. The outcome of the work he led includes a number of open datasets that have been used by scientists around the world, online prediction models that are accessible to anyone, games that have been played by thousands of scientists and an enormous collection of presentations, video tutorials and Open Courseware that will likely be references for the Open Notebook Science movement for many years to come.

Until 2017, the intranet homepage of Brookhaven National Laboratory had not been substantially redesigned since 2004. In the intervening 13 years, ideas about web design, content strategy, information architecture, and the function of an employee intranet changed dramatically. Our redesign project addressed the need for an intranet that better served Lab employees as an information resource that made their daily work lives a little easier. This talk reviews how user data was collected and analyzed to arrive at a final product.

This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

29. Template 1.0: ‘Our Science’ Landing Page
Intro to BNL’s work
Brookhaven’s scientific breakthroughs ensure a
successful energy future for our nation. We
research:
1. nuclear and particle physics, to understand more
about matter, energy, space, and time;
2. photon sciences and nanomaterials, to research
new kinds of energy production; and
3. the relationship between climate change,
sustainable energy, and the Earth’s ecosystems.
Themes
Energy Security: We collaborate with industry and
academic partners to reduce the carbon footprint
of our economy through efficiency and renewable
fuels.
Light as a Discovery Tool: Our light sources work
as powerful microscopes to help researchers find
solutions to the grand energy challenges facing
the US.
Etc. …

would be easy for them to find it
• List of content to dump b/c it had no WHY
• Where the content gaps were and what had to be
written to better explain the Lab’s mission, capabilities,
national value and achievements

53. I applaud your motivation and expect that the results
will be fantastic. However, I was shocked earlier this
month when CERN rolled out their new web pages.
Perhaps it was the way I used the old web pages, but
it is much harder to find the links which were
trivially available on the old CERN site.
78. The world is split into websites that work
with Instapaper, and stuff that has now
been rendered irrelevant to me.
