Growing up in Brooklyn, New York I had many friends from different cultural
backgrounds, and the neighborhood I lived in was a melting pot of families from all
over the globe. Among them Kimmie Chang, Gabby Martinez, Bella D Amato, and
Logan O Neill. The air always smelt of delicious ethnic cuisines, and all of the
languages were interesting to listen to. The best part was that each familyhad children
close to my age so I was always experiencing a different lifestyle. Feeling so popular
among the community, I was invited to dinner at all of my friend s houses at a
certain time of the year. Fascinated by different dialect I found myself analyzing
conversation at the dinner table, observing the way each family s lifestyle was so
different than mine in every way. During my younger years, my brain was able to
process a lot from my friends and their families that I could write a book.
One spring afternoon during the sixth grade, Kimmie Chang s family moved in next
door all the way from South Korea. I was invited to play at her home and luckily, I

The symbolism of the string snapping is even more clear at the end of Act IV,

snapped string dying mournfully away is heard, [a] stillness falls, and nothing is
heard but the thud of an ax on a tree far away in the orchard (815). With the orchard
(the status of aristocracy) in the hands of Lopakhin (the new commercial class), the
old days are forever gone. All that is left to hear is the destruction of the orchard as
the new class builds its world from the remains of the old. However, in 1917, the
Bolsheviks would succeed in altering Russia in a more lasting way, and this small
revolution would be subsumed by Communism.

New York, the city that never sleeps, the city where dreams are made realities, and
one of the most prominent cities in the world, is where I was born. Despite living
there for only three and a half years, I have a special connection with the city as it
holds the what ifs and what could have beens. I remember going to see the lighting
of the big Christmas tree in Manhattan and crying for a red purse in the mall. I
