Agenda
• Mobile Data does not come cheap in some countries
• Users are conscious of the amount of data allocated per month, and how much is consumed.
• Fixed Broadband data allowance is comparatively better in data allowance, where typically
customers purchase 200Gb+ per month, compared to 1-2Gb per month for Mobile Broadband
consumption.
• There are more and more mobile devices to be released in the next few years to cater for M2M
services, IoT devices, Smart Wearables and more device uptake and usage from existing
subscribers.

Mobile Broadband
Telstra is required by legislation to operate and
maintain the pay phone network.
There has been a decline of payphone usage, and it is
largely due to the rapid uptake of smart phones and
mobile internet devices. Telstra is looking at different
ways to utilize payphone sites.

Public Payphones
• 2 Million WiFi hotspots across Australia within 5
years using a mix of different methods.
• Telstra Wi-Fi being deployed at some payphone
locations.
• This is already being done in London, New York, by
other carriers
• Service is not exclusive for Telstra Customers only
(at some sites non-Telstra customers will be able to
buy Passes to access the hotspots).
• Delivery methods:
• Public WiFi APs at selected Payphone sites,
Telstra Stores, outside Telephone Exchanges
• Home Gateways and participating shops and
businesses using special Telstra WiFi gateways
broadcasting a separate SSID.

Simplification and Virtualisation
• Software Defined Networking is real but is in its very early stages
• Two initial issues it can be deployed for:
• Service Chaining
• Network Monitoring

• NFV should be deployed on lower impact network elements
• Does your ISP use cloud services? Why not use it internally to virtualize some common network
services like DNS / Syslog?
• Do you really want to virtualize your routers and switches first?
• Virtual Evolved Packet Core – certainly viable and worthy proposition. Are the risks worth the
benefit if you have a large investment already?
Virtual Machines Virtual Firewalls Virtual Switches Virtual Routers / Gateways
• KVM / Hypervisor?
