C202: HOW TO: Making the HTML5 Video Element Interactive
The HTML5 Video element has now become widely used by browsers and supported in a broad set of websites for streaming video content. With some JavaScript and CSS, we can leverage the HTML video element to create highly interactive experiences for the viewer in both traditional and mobile browsing environments. This hands-on session explores the integration of events with the video timeline, creating positioned hotspots with links and dynamic content, and capturing user input. In addition, the session examines supporting mobile platform browsers along with future opportunities with the HTML5 video tag. Get sample code, ideas, and best practices for making the HTML5 video element an engaging interactive experience for your viewers.

Open Art – designing a multimedia guide app for people with and without senso...University of Warsaw
While many museums cater for the needs of their visually impaired patrons by providing them with a special audio descriptive guide, containing detailed visual descriptions of works of art, the goal of the Open Art project is to develop a multimedia guide app, based on design for all principles, aimed at all types of visitors, with and without sensory impairments. We believe it is possible to create one description that would serve all museum visitors – regardless of whether they are blind or sighted, hearing or deaf. Each description of a work of art will include a short introduction to the work of art, its visual description, context and interpretation.

Individualized Instruction and Learning Using the iPod TouchMobicip.com
Comal ISD in New Braunfels, TX, has implemented a 1:1 learning program using the Apple iPod Touch for its English language learners. Middle school students who participate in the program are each given an iPod Touch that contains apps, music, documents, presentations and instructional videos that allow the students to learn on their own time outside of school hours. Participants in this session will get an inside view of the program, how the program evolved from concept to reality, cover acceptable use policy, security and deployment management, and anecdotal evidence of the benefits derived by students participating in the program.
Design of Rapid Serial Visual Presentation Panel for Arabic ReadersIJERA Editor
The primary objective of the Rapid Serial Visual Presentation Panel (RSVPP) was to aid in understanding the Arabic moving messages in different public places such as mosques, hospitals, factories, emergencies, malls, and markets. RSVPP is potentially useful tool for presenting important intensive information in a rapid manner. Speed of showing words in the screens, colors of fonts/backgrounds, font styles, and polarization are some important factors that may affect the reading comprehended and speed. The initial stage of the project was to study the available panels that were designed in English formats. The layout of the new configuration of the designed panel as well as the requirements for developing was made in order to make realistic recommendations considering environmental and human users as a next stage. Message speed (180, 240, and 300 words per minute (wpm)), space between words (one, two characters), and fore/background colors (red, blue, green and white on black background) were independent variables. Percent of correct response, percent of correct comprehension and preference rating were dependent responses. Results of this study recommended that moving 240 wpm with one character among words in green character/black background color was superior over the other conditions.

Definition of Requirements for Accessing Multilingual Information and OpinionsMikolaj Leszczuk
With the development of the Internet and satellite television, access to thousands of programs and messages in different languages became widespread. Unfortunately, even well educated people do not speak sufficiently more than two or three foreign languages, while most know only one, and this significantly limits the access to this information. In this paper, we define requirements for an automated system for Accessing Multilingual Information and opinionS (AMIS) that will help in the understanding of multimedia content transmitted in different languages, with simultaneous comparison to counterparts in their native language user. The concept of understanding we use will provide access to any information, regardless of the language in which it is presented. We believe that the AMIS project can have a immense and positive impact on the integration and awareness of society in social and cultural terms.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
