Reading Apprenticeship (RA) is an approach to teaching reading that actively engages students in the reading process. It utilizes strategies before, during, and after reading to increase comprehension. Some examples of strategies include anticipation guides to activate prior knowledge, thinking aloud to model good reading habits, and summarization activities like 25-word abstracts or 3-2-1 charts. While RA may seem time consuming initially, the process speeds up as students become familiar with the strategies. The goal is to get students to think about reading like good readers do.
