What is RA? A different way of thinking about reading. RA is the result of a literacy research and professional development project at WestEd – a nonprofit education research, development, and service agency headquartered in San Francisco, CA. Can you picture your students readinglike this?
Why RA? Increases reading comprehension! Utilizes strategies for all phases of the reading process (before, during, and after) Modeled on good readers Engages studentsin the reading process We learn from other readers!
Examples of Before Reading Strategies Anticipation Guide and K-W-L Activates prior knowledge Develops a purpose  for reading Makes connections: complete before, revise after
Examples of During Reading Strategies Talking to the Text (T2T) Students interact with text Write in margins, make notes, ask questions, etc. Share in pairs and as a class to clarify reading Think Aloud Students practice good mental strategies Verbalize thought process What if he didn’t share his thoughts?
Examples of After Reading Strategies Twenty-five Word Abstract Summarization of main ideas Compare and contrast across the class 3-2-1 Individual or group activity 3 Things you found out 2 interesting things 1 question you still have
Conclusion Different way of thinking about reading Actively engages learners in the reading process. Employs many strategies you may already use. Many teachers worry RA is time consuming for the classroom. After students become familiar with the strategies the process moves quickly.
