WHAT IS AN IDIOM?
 An idiom is an expression whose
meaning cannot be understood based
on the definition of its constitutional
elements.
 Idioms are phrases which people use in
everyday language which do not make
sense literally but we understand what
they mean.
1.When the politician was caught
stealing from the taxpayers,
everyone thought he would
receive a severe punishment, but
all he got was a slap on the
wrist.
2.We thought that our neighbors,
the Jones family, were rich
beyond our wildest dreams, but it
turns out that we’re all in the
same boat.
3.If Kim thinks that I’m going to let
her copy my English
homework, she’s barking up the
wrong tree.
4.The Lions thought that they
would easily beat the other team,
but when it was tied with a minute
left in the fourth quarter, they
knew that this game was really
coming down to the wire.
Read each
idiom and
determine the
meaning.
1. Having lost everything he
owed on the horses a few
days before, he knew he
would have to start from
square one again.
2.As he approached the bar in
the tiny Sahara Village, he
paused for a moment and
savored the smells of cooking
wafting across the terracotta
rooftops. He was so hungry he
could eat a horse, or a
chicken or two.
3.I escaped by the skin of my
teeth and fled to the Southern
Jungle where I set a casino.
4. After all what he had done, I
think it’s time for Marcus to
face the music.
Read each
idiom and
determine the
meaning.
Idiom Advice- Make a dialogue
 Using the idioms, give advice to these people:
 Tom: I really want to go see a movie tonight, but I'm trying to save
my money to buy a new watch.
 Advice:______________________________________
 Julie: I just saw my brother's girlfriend with another boy, but he's in
a really bad mood because he got fired this morning. Do you think
I should tell him?
 Advice:______________________________________
 Iris: Did you hear that? I think I heard something in the kitchen!
Wait. . . . I'm not sure. There it is again! I think I heard something.
Do you hear it? Maybe it's a ghost! Maybe it's a thief!
 Advice:______________________________________
 William: My grandfather is so old that he's almost deaf. When I
talk to him, he doesn't even notice that I'm talking.
 Advice:______________________________________
A penny saved is a penny earned.
Don’t kick the man when he’s down.
It’s all in your head!
Shout at the top of your lungs.
