READING
TIME
WHO SAYS?
Statement 1
“That one chance
depends upon her
desire to get better.”
Statement 2
“When the last leaf
of that vine falls. I
must go, too.”
Statement 3
"What connection have those
old leaves with your getting
well? And you used to love
that old vine so much.
Please, don't be silly!
Statement 4
"Are there people in the world who
are foolish enough to die simply
because leaves fall from an old
vine? I have never heard such a
thing. Why do you permit such silly
ideas to come into her mind? Oh,
that poor little Miss Johnsy!"
Statement 5
"Something has made the
last leaf stay there just to
show me how bad I was. It
was a sin to want to die."
Statement 6
“And now I must go to see
another patient downstairs.
His name is Behrman. He is
some kind of artist, I believe.
Pneumonia, too."
Statement 7
“They couldn't figure out where he
had been on such a terrible night. And
then they found a lantern, still
lighted, a ladder, and some other
things which showed that, during the
wind and rain, he climbed up and
painted a green leaf on the wall of the
house opposite.”
How many leaves
where there?
Processing Questions:
1.Describe the main character, Johnsy.
2.What is the condition of Johnsy?
3.What did the doctor say about
Johnsy’s chances of recovery?
4.How does her friend, Sue, view
Johnsy’s belief that she will die when
the last leaf falls? What about Mr.
Behrman?
5. What helps Johnsy recover from her
illness?
6. What did Mr. Behrman do to give
Johnsy hope?
7. Summarize the text based on the
statements of the characters.
Summary of the Story
Two friends Sue and Johnsy live together in a
rented apartment. Johnsy contracts pneumonia and
loses her desire to live. She announces that she
would die when the last leaf fell off the ivy creeper
that could be seen from the room’s window. When
the last leaf falls off, their neighbour, Mr Behrman
goes out in the storm to paint one. This gives hope
to Johnsy. On the other hand, Mr Behrman
contracts pneumonia and dies.
8. What is the
over-all message
of the story?
1. What does “hope” mean to you?
How is it important in our lives?
2. If you were going to encourage
Johnsy, what words, phrases or
sentences you would use to give her
hope? Why?
3. What values did Mr. Behrman show in the
statement, “They couldn't figure out where he
had been on such a terrible night. And then they
found a lantern, still lighted, a ladder, and some
other things which showed that, during the wind
and rain, he climbed up and painted a green
leaf on the wall of the house opposite”? Do you
think it is right to sacrifice our life and became
selfless in order to render hope to others? Why
or why not?
Assignment:

that you have learned and define them in
your own words. Minimum of 10, maximum
