This document discusses Altera's FPGA strategy for reconfigurable hardware in industry applications. It defines reconfigurable hardware as an architecture that does not require on-the-fly timing analysis because product qualification is extensively done through temperature and cycle testing without hardware architecture changes. It then shows how programmable solutions have evolved from single CPU and DSP cores to multi-core processors and coarse-grained arrays with FPGAs moving to fine-grained, massively parallel arrays with embedded hard IP blocks. Future trends include challenges of scaling CPUs due to physical limits and the benefits of parallelism through hardware reconfiguration.

Simulation Directed Co-Design from Smartphones to SupercomputersEric Van Hensbergen
SystemExplorer is a system simulation framework based upon the open-source gem5 simulation infrastructure. It includes a rich collection of hardware components such as ARM cores, interconnect, memories and memory controllers, IO devices - ethernet, PCIe, and other peripherals. In addition it provides support for run fully featured operating systems such as Linux and Android combined with pre-packaged filesystem images that contain real workloads and benchmarks for Smartphone, Server and High Performance Computing. In this talk I'll give an overview of ARM R&D's use of the SystemExplorer tool for workload directed architectural co-design. I will focus on how we are using it in combination with the Department of Energy's co-design center proxy applications to help evaluate and enable the ARM architecture to address the power-efficiency, performance, and resilience requirements of Exascale computing.

System on Chip (SoC) for mobile phonesJeffrey Funk
These slides use concepts (e.g., scaling) from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to look at how reductions in the feature sizes for integrated circuits (ICs) are enabling increases in the functionality of IC chips and thus the placements of larger systems on them. In turn, these increases in functionality of ICs are enabling increases in the functionality of mobile phones while at the same time creating new challenges for IC and mobile phone suppliers.

STT MRAM for Artificial Intelligence ApplicationsDanny Sabour
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has been making a huge impact on our daily lives, especially in the fields of recommendation systems, image recognition, natural language processing, and autonomous driving. As the amount of input data, weight parameters and intermediate data in the machine learning process grows exponentially, memory becomes a critical bottleneck, which requires a high density, low power and high speed non-volatile memory (NVM) solution. Among emerging NVM technologies, spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random access memory (STT-MRAM) based on perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (pMTJ) shows distinct advantages:
- High speed (comparable to DRAM and LLC), low standby power (vs eSRAM) and low active power deliver high tera operation per second (TOPS) per watt during the training and inference process.
- Practically unlimited endurance allows large amount of data to be intensively processed.
- High data retention allows weight parameters of neural network to be directly stored in NVM without extra power consumption (DRAM refreshing or SRAM leakage), especially for edge computing.
- Excellent scalability to advanced technology nodes (beyond 7 nm) allows ASIC design with high density (vs eSRAM) for specific AI applications.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
