  1. Tick box? – a less positive eg: some vcs reps are invited because the Board thinks (or is told) they should have them there – without really thinking about why. This can be difficult, but if you can SHOW YOUR WORTH then you can get beyond this stage – if you use the meetings well and demonstrate your value.
  2. Sometimes VCS reps are included to give the illusion of ‘partnership’ Are you just there to provide “cover” for decisions already made? This is the most dangerous position to be in – esp if you’re expected to accept Corporate Responsibility Are you prepared to take “corporate responsibility” for the Board’s decisions without question: ie without lending credibility to poor decision making processes? Are you prepared to use your integrity to say “No” Remember:– the reason why you are included doesn’t have to limit what you can actually achieve.
  3. You may be there to help achieve “Buy-in” from the local vcs. If so, this is a powerful position, as you will expect the Partnership to persuade you of their ‘ask’ first…. Or you can use some ‘asks’ to get leverage for other things your constituents want through suggesting practical and relevant changes (I am not suggesting doing dodgy deals): “How can I ask the vcs for that? What about asking them for buy-in to this?”
  4. “Critical Friend” is a crucial term – often used, sometimes even understood by Partners. EXPLAIN “CRITICAL FRIEND” - RELATE TO “CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY” It is a good role to have – as it shows they expect you to challenge. But you must think of balancing both terms – critic and friend – and showing that you do (and good idea to show friend 1st)
  5. What does the P Board EXPECT from you? Innocent bystander? Neutral, caught in the crossfire between local authority and NHS? Can be confused by what is ‘really’ being said. This can be the worst case – if whole committee are involved – but otherwise you can find allies involved who want to achieve some of the aims of the Board (that you will have also signed up to)... You can try to find the role of ‘honest broker’ OR referee?! ...
  6. Calming voice reminding others of the human result of their decisions… can be v powerful – or vv dispiriting! Of course not all Boards will be as dysfunctional as some of this suggests – but they can be!
  7. Irritant – this can be good or bad: are you the fly in the ointment – or
  8. Or…. The grit in the oyster that creates the peal? you may have to take time to prove that the irritant (fly) is actually helpful (grit) in the longer term. Tip: Don’t give up on same point – though you may have to be patient before raising it again: Poll 3: Do you feel confident that the other Board members understand your role?
  9. Who do you represent and what do they want from you What is “representation” – who or what do you represent? Can anyone think of others?
  10. Are you empowered to give your views or do you have to go back each time for a specific mandate? MPs are representatives – not delegates. Trade Union reps are often delegates – being told precisely how to vote by their members. Do those you are representing know the difference? What do they expect from you?
