RADIO CULTURE
P H I L I P P I N E P O P U L A R C U L T U R E
By bringing information, critical commentary, the arts, and
entertainment directly into homes, it democratized cultural reception
more than any other previous medium.
• In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi
developed an alternator
appliance that could send
signals much farther and
with little background noise
• The first official radio
broadcast took place in
1922.
• By 2024, the country saw its
first commercial radio
station, KZKZ (later known
as KZRH).
• The post-war period
marked a golden age of
radio.
• The 1980s saw a shift to FM
radio and increased
commercialization.
Radio broadcasting in the Philippines has a multifaceted role in promoting
music, language, entertainment, news, community engagement, and
social causes. It serves as a vital medium for cultural expression,
information dissemination, and fostering a sense of unity among Filipinos.
One of the most famous and influential radio stations in the Philippines is DZMM
Radyo Patrol 630 AM. DZMM is a flagship AM radio station under the ABS-CBN
Corporation, one of the largest media conglomerates in the country. It is based in
Metro Manila but has nationwide coverage through its network of relay stations.
Through its dedication to quality storytelling, audience
engagement, and cultural relevance, Barangay LS 97.1 has played
a pivotal role in shaping the radio drama landscape in the
Philippines.
The "Radio Box Memo" was written by David Sarnoff, who advocated
turning radio into a "household utility."
• In 1916, David Sarnoff (1891-1971), then working for American Marconi
(the forerunner of today's Radio Corporation of America), drafted a
memorandum outlining a strategy for mass radio broadcasting.
• E.J. Nally, vice president of the American branch of Marconi Wireless
Telegraph Company turned down the memo.
• In the memo, Sarnoff predicted that by 2050, not only music but also
news, sports, and even lectures would be broadcast over the
airwaves, earning him millions of dollars from the sale of "radio
music boxes."
• General Electic greed to front $2000 for a prototype.
• July 2, 1921- Sarniff arranged Jack Dempsey-Georges Carpenter
prizefight.
• From a messenger boy to a junior telegrapher, to a general
telegrapher, to a general, David Sarnoff went from purely power and
money to politics.
• Sarnoff retired at the age of 79, leaving behind him a trail of
technological achievements and boundless drive.
The most momentous event of the American era in the Philippines was the
introduction of radio in 1922. Henry Hermann installed 50-watt radio stations in
Manila and Pasay in June 1922. Prior to World War II, most radio stations were
owned by Americans and staffed almost entirely by Americans; broadcasts were
in English; and shows covered both entertainment and news.
Before World War II, six private stations (KZRM, KZRF, KZIB, KZEG, KZRH, and KZRC)
and one government station (KZND) informed Filipinos of the war. The Secretary
of Commerce established the Radio Control Board in 1931 to implement Radio
Control Law. The board allocated frequencies legally, reviewed applications, and
conducted inspections. Thus, the government could monitor the new medium.
The term "simulcasting" refers to the practice of airing content concurrently
across various platforms or channels. It entails the simultaneous, real-time
distribution of media, such as television programs, musical performances,
sporting events, or other forms of cultural content, across a variety of platforms.
According to Danesi (2019) simulcasting is
the broadcasting of programs across more
than one medium at exactly the same time.
• The term "simulcasting" is derived from
the words "simultaneous" and
"broadcasting,
• In the early days of radio and television
broadcasting, content was primarily
transmitted over the airwaves.
• With the rise of the internet and digital
technologies, simulcasting has evolved
to encompass online streaming and
distribution.
Love Radio offers simulcasting, which enables viewers to tune in to their
preferred radio programs and take advantage of the station's music and
entertainment content across several devices.
For comprehensive coverage of their games, the PBA has partnered with
several Philippine broadcasting networks, including TV5, ESPN5, and PBA
Rush. A radio network called DZSR also prioritizes sports-related
programming and coverage.
Streaming refers to relaying video and audio material over a computer
network as a steady continuous “stream,” allowing playback while subsequent
material is being received.
Spotify allows users to access a vast library of music, podcasts, and other
audio content on-demand and provides continuous playback of music
tracks, allowing users to listen to songs seamlessly without interruptions.
One of the most used application in Streaming is Facebook. Mobile Legends and
Facebook are integrated, enabling users to connect their gaming accounts to
their Facebook pages. The streaming experience is further improved by this
integration, which enables streamers to show off their in-game
accomplishments, statistics, and advancement to their Facebook audience.
• In 2004, Adam Curry and Dave Winer created a
program called iPodder that allowed people to
download audio blogs to their iPods.
• 1st highly popular podcast series = Daily Source
Code
• The term "podcasting by Ben Hammersley, a
technology journalist for The Guardian.
• End of 2004, Libsyn, the first podcast service
provider was founded.
• In 2005, Apple launched the iPod and iTunes,
which helped to popularize podcasting.
• Podcasts cover a wide range of topics, including
news, entertainment, education, and comedy.
• Podcasts are a popular way to listen to audio
content, and they are growing in popularity
every year.
Podcasting is a digital audio medium that allows listeners to download or stream
content on-demand. Podcasts cover a wide range of topics, including news,
entertainment, education, and comedy. They are a popular way to listen to audio
content, and they are growing in popularity every year
Gabi ng Bading is a podcast from the Philippines hosted by 2 social media

A talk show is a type of television or radio program where a host interviews one
or more guests about various topics. Talk shows are distinguished from other
programs by their focus on conversation and their use of a live audience.
• Early days of talk radio
⚬ typically hosted by
politicians or other public
figures
• The rise of television talks
shows
⚬ Shows were often used to
promote a particular
product
⚬ by 1970s, served as a
platform for people to
discuss controversial
issues.
• Evolution of talk shows
The Vice Ganda Show is a Philippine late-night comedy talk show hosted by Vice
Ganda. It premiered on May 22, 2011, and airs every Sunday from 9:30 PM to 10:30
PM on ABS-CBN. The show features comedic interviews and interactive segments
with celebrity guests, as well as live performances from various artists.
Tonight with Boy Abunda (TWBA) is a Philippine late-night talk show hosted by
Boy Abunda. It premiered on September 28, 2015, and airs every weeknights from
10:35 PM to 10:50 PM on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida evening block. The show
discusses a variety of topics, including showbiz, lifestyle, homosexuality, and
politics.
As ex-presidential speechwriter Peggy Noonan aptly phrased it, “TV gives
everyone an image, but radio gives birth to a million images in a million brains”
According to Danesi (2019), radio was
the first significant media stage for
promoting entertainment culture and
integrating cultural products with
marketplace needs and patterns,
through adapting print and vaudevillian
genres to a new electronic medium for
wider audience reception.
Radio dramas are dramatized, primarily auditory productions that are
intended to concentrate on creating a mental image in the listeners' head.
They merely employ dialogue, music, and sound effects.
WISH 107.5 is one of the fastest rising all-hits radio stations in the metro. It is
also known for pioneering innovative endeavors that revolutionized the
traditional FM radio broadcast practices.
"Among the first uses of the power of the human voice on the radio was
advertising." (Danesi, 2019)
According to Danesi (2019), the radio introduced
the commercial, a mini-narrative or musical
jingle about a product or service. The human
voice could be seductive, friendly, cheery,
insistent, or foreboding, depending on the
advertising pitch, allowing the commercial to
instantly reach and sway masses of potential
customers. Early radio commercials combined
satire of popular culture, pseudoscientific
narratives ("The product is scientifically tested for
effectiveness"), and catchy jingles.
James Black pioneered radio advertising while working for Procter & Gamble,
Philippines (then Philippine Manufacturing Company). He started at P&G as a studio
technician. Radio commercials were either broadcast live or recorded and played
back from a disc. The team had to wait for stations to sign off before recording a
sixty-second spot, so radio commercial production often started after midnight.
The Nescafe commercial, is one of the most famous example of
radio advertising today. This radio advertisement aired for the
fourth quarter of 2021 and is still airing up to this date.
A digital audio service streamed over the Internet, instead of being aired on the
conventional AM or FM channels.
According to Danesi (2019), internet radio
(also called web radio, streaming radio,
e-radio, online radio, webcasting) is,
simply, radio programming transmitted
via the internet. Despite having
technologically based differences,
internet radio continues to transmit the
same kinds of programming that offline
radio does—news, sports, talk, music.
DZMM TeleRadyo is a radio broadcaster owned and operated by ABS-CBN
Corporation. It eventually unveiled new lower-third graphics as the channel
migrated to high-definition television broadcast online.
MOR Entertainment is a national brand of new media radio station
operated by ABS-CBN Corporation. Started as an FM brand, it
resurfaced as an online radio station since the forced shutdown of
ABS-CBN.
Radio became a partner with the movies, the music industry, and other domains of the
entertainment world to make pop culture a kind of culture by default. It also blended high
and low forms of culture, having programs that ranged from live opera performances to pop
music hit parades. From the outset, this showed that the lines between levels of culture are
immaterial, that radio caters to all tastes (Danesi, 2019, p. 201).
Super Radyo DZBB 594 kHz is the flagship AM radio station of GMA Network
in the Philippines. It is one of the top stations in the AM band in Metro
Manila and is recognized as one of the most awarded radio stations in the
Philippines by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas or KBP.

( Radyo na, TV pa! )
An indirect influence that radio has had was that it became an implicit social text. A
social text needs a source of delivery so that the community can receive it. Radio as
a social text in the Philippines plays a significant role in reflecting and shaping
cultural values, beliefs, and practices. It serves as a platform for cultural expression
and local identity, showcasing diverse music, language, and traditions.
Overall, radio as a social text in the Philippines is a powerful medium that
connects people, reflects cultural dynamics, and plays a vital role in
informing, entertaining, and engaging the Filipino population.
Radyo Lumad 1575 AM is the expression of the struggles of the Lumad who
have been marginalized, discriminated, and oppressed. The radio is the voice
of the Lumad in Mindanao that seeks to be heard. Through the radio, the
Lumads can impart their own culture.
Radyo Veritas is a prominent Catholic radio station in the Philippines. It is
operated by the Archdiocese of Manila and serves as the official radio station of
the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Radyo Veritas was
established in 1969 and has since become one of the country's leading religious
broadcasting institutions.
Radio ushered in the information age, with radio news becoming part
information, part social commentary, and part entertainment. The
addictive need we have for news today is likely traceable to the radio age
and its emphasis on the news.
A radio program geared towards voter education and political analysis of the
latest developments in Philippine politics, with a specific focus on the upcoming
2022 national elections. In partnership with DZUP, the official radio station of UP
Diliman, the UP sa Halalan Project headed by the Department of Political Science
launched Radyo Halalan last 23 February 2022.
Wanted sa Radyo is a public affairs show that airs on Monday to Friday from 2:00 to 4:00
pm on 92.3 Radyo5 TRUE FM (DWFM). The show investigates and exposes cases of abuse,
dishonesty, exploitation, and family disputes, as well as recognizes ordinary people who
return items of value that they find in their course of work. The show regularly emphasizes
Tulfo's no-nonsense approach and interrogation, sometimes laced with profanity.
