2. Most of the people that
completed the
questionnaire were teens,
due to this being within
the age bracket of our
target audience, as well is
this extending to the
limitations of people we
were able to question.
However, we also wanted
to included members
outside of our target
audience in order to find
the perspective others
have of youth.
AGE
3. The range of genders we
have are primarily, by a
slight amount, female. The
theme of youth that we are
aiming for in our music
videos is a theme varying in
interpretation, therefore,
having a variety of different
types of people giving their
opinion is an important
factor. In addition, different
genders will have different
meanings not only their
youth but what youth as a
whole is like.
GENDER
4. This is a question
we wanted to
focus the reader’s
attention and
filter our results
to show the
opinions of those
who don’t listen
to music as well
as those who do.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC?
5. The amount of time
spent listening to music
videos will differ from
person to person. This
is useful when thinking
about our goal for our
music video seeing as
the difference in
exposure to music will
shape the ways in
which the audience
thinks.
IF SO HOW OFTEN?
6. This is similar to the
previous question in
terms of focusing the
audience’s responses
to hone in on music
videos. From the
data we can see that
most of the people
do listen watch
music videos.
DO YOU WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS?
7. The data shows
that despite the
fact people like
music, not as
many people
watch music
videos.
IF SO HOW OFTEN?
8. The majority of people
prefer narrative videos,
closely followed by
symbolic. Narrative
music videos for youth
would be a good choice
due to being able to
explore different
character narratives to
explore the different
avenues that youth
involves, as well as the
inclusion of symbolism to
portray different
interpretations that the
audience have of youth.
WHAT STYLE OF MUSIC VIDEO DO YOU LIKE?
9. Most of the people that
we surveyed like Indie
music. This benefits us
due to the genre for our
music video being Indie.
Seeing as this is the case,
with the majority of our
target audience being the
majority of the people
that have answered the
questionnaire, we can
see that we have chosen
a genre that accurately
represents youth.
WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
10. Most of the people we
asked want to see Grunge
Appearance and Alcohol,
which is good due to this
being two aspects that
we wish to include within
our piece. This indicates
to us that we have
chosen themes that
comply to the needs of
the audience and have
the right idea of what
youth is.
WHAT THEMES DO YOU WANT TO SEE
WITHIN A MUSIC VIDEO?
11. HOW ESSENTIAL ARE THESE ELEMENTS IN
THE MUSIC VIDEO?
The data shows that most people would find Props and Costume
the most important, followed by Location and Lighting, and
finally Shot Type being the least important. This shows us that
our attention needs to be focused on the mise-en-scene
elements within the piece more than anything else. Clothing
and props hold a lot of symbolism within them, employing
Stuart Hall’s Encoding method of communication theory (1975),
props and costume can be used in order to convey a message to
the audience subtly, namely, identifying aspects such as the
characteristics of the people as well as the media text they’re
watching. Over the next few slides are graphs for the other
categories previously listed.
15. HOW ESSENTIAL ARE THESE ELEMENTS THE
IN CHARACTER(S)?
According to the data, most people would find Gender, Ethnicity and Sexuality the most important,
followed by Class and finally, Age. This is interesting to find due to the current political stand-point
amongst many people is the fight for universal equality. The fact that gender has been chosen is
significant with the rise in the feminism movement that has been taking place over the past years
which has seen major improvement from the previous position of the world. Ethnicity holds
importance due to the coming about of the racial attacks on ethnic minorities being at its peak in
regularity which is a major issue many people are still fighting after such a long time. This also very
effectively proves Cohen’s Moral Panic Theory (1972) due to events such as 9/11 accelerating
Islamophobia, the London Riots contributing to the increased fear of teenagers, the unfairly over-
televised crimes committed by black people increasing hatred for this race, and so on. Finally,
sexuality is becoming more and more transparent to people, with many people having the courage to
feel safe to shamelessly be who they are and for people to fight by their side in support of true
equality for all. The increased representation of people with alternative sexual orientations and/or
genders has allowed people to have the strength to come forward in spite of the potential adversity,
and be a source of hope for those still in fear of the consequences of who they are. More and more
people are becoming curious to the adversities faced by people within the LGBT+ group, leading to an
increased interest in how help can be given, thus creating the pathway for people to see this way of
life, which may well be foreign to the receiving audience, and contribute to the continued revelation
of what it is like to be in the LGBT+ community. Over the next few slides are graphs for the other
categories previously listed.
19. Within the theme of youth, there are
many stereotypically good associations
and many stereotypically bad
associations. Here we have outlined
the potential associations we would
potentially use within our piece in
order to get a fair depiction of what
youth is like. According to the data,
the majority of people would not be
offended by the inclusion of these
associations, which is good as this will
allow is to create verisimilitude when
conveying the theme of youth. These
are also the associations that some
viewers might find offensive or may be
sensitive to, therefore in making sure
that these themes would be OK to
include as decided by the majority of
the focus group, we will take this into
consideration.
WOULD YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WATCHING A MUSIC VIDEO
WHICH FEATURES CIGARETTES, ALCOHOL AND RECKLESS
BEHAVIOUR SUCH AS MINOR DRUG USE?
