Question 4:
Who would be the
audience for your
media product?
MUSIC SCENE EVALUATION
 I knew that I wanted to make a magazine with an indie music genre
because I had the most resources for this, such as the clothes for the
models.
 I also had quite a good knowledge already of what type of thing to
put in a magazine of this genre, such as it being mainly information
and including things such as festivals.
 To help research my audience, I looked at the UK Tribes website.
 To give myself a variety of ideas, I researched other
‘tribes’ that were said to be in the ‘leading edge’
category along with the indie scenesters who were
my original plan.
 In this category, I researched ‘Hipsters’ and ‘Creatives’ yet decided
to stick with the indie scenesters because I still preferred my original
ideas.
 I looked at the stats under the indie scenester category to help me
decide on my mass target audience.
 I found the magazine Clash, which had a similar style to what I
wanted to make.
 It also targeted a similar audience to me, so I used their media pack
to research my audience so that I could be sure about a more
specific target audience.
 I did the same for mixmag, which although had a different genre of
music, being more about dance, still targeted around the same age
as me by using similar layouts.
 Clash have a very even audience between men and women.
Mixmag also had a spread of both, but more focused on men. From
this I decided on an audience evenly spread between male and
female.
 Both audiences were in their 20’s, mainly mid 20’s. I wanted a
sophisticated magazine much like both and a lot like Clash so I
decided my mass audience would be about 16-25 with a niche
audience of a little bit older.
 They also mostly lived in the city, which is why I made a lot of my
images and stories city based.
