Question 3: What kind of media
institution might distribute your
media product and why?
By Henry Pike
Blumhouse
ProductionsBlumhouse Productions is an American
film and television production company,
founded by Jason Blum. Blumhouse
produces micro and low-budget horror
movies, such as the Paranormal Activity,
Insidious, The Purge, Sinister and Ouija
franchises. In 2014, Blumhouse produced
the Academy Award–nominated drama
film Whiplash, for which Blum was
nominated for the Academy Award for Best
Picture. The company currently has a 10-
year first-look deal with the studio
Universal Pictures.
Blumhouse Productions
• Jason Blum has a particular method that he uses to make films
that he believes will be successful. He finds an interesting
idea, and then puts together a solid cast, never exceeds a
budget of $10 million and manages to make hundreds of
millions of dollars. However, the success of some of his films
was unprecedented, like Paranormal Activity, as no one
could've predicted how successful it was and that it would
produce 4 sequels and 2 spin-offs.
Their most successful films include: the Paranormal Activity
franchise, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Dark Skies and Ouija.
Blumhouse Productions
• The company which would make and distribute my film is most
likely a mainstream film company such as Blumhouse Productions
because of their success from over the years of many horror films
that are mentioned above, it gives me great confidence that this is
the most likely film company would make my film successful as my
Horror film is mainstream and conveys all the codes and
conventions of horror films which has the same/similar codes and
conventions as the horror films that Blumhouse Productions have
made.
Blumhouse Productions
The majority of the films which Blumhouse productions make have the target audience of late
teenagers and young adults, as the majority of its bestseller films, such as ‘Sinister’ and ‘The Purge’
have an age restriction of 15. Due to the target audience of the majority of their films being of the
‘social media generation’ Blumhouse Productions focus heavily on new media, using different social
media websites to promote their films, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and YouTube.
One example of Blumhouse Productions using New Media to market their films is for the film ‘The
Purge’, where they asked audience members to use the hashtag Survivethenight, when discussing the
film. They also used countdowns, fake propaganda material and public service announcements on
various social media sights to set the world of the scene for prospective audience members. In terms
of Traditional Media, Blumhouse Productions released the first trailer and posters for ‘The Purge’ on
the 3rd April 2013, when the film was released on 31st May 2013. Therefore, for my horror film
‘Scarecrow’ if Blumhouse Productions were to be produce my film, I would expect the marketing to be
hugely New Media based.
