QUESTION 5
HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
Kim Last
DURING THE VIDEO, THERE ARE VARIOUS
QUESTIONABLE ELEMENTS THAT WOULD
ATTRACT THE AUDIENCE TO CARRY ON
WATCHING – IN HOPES TO FIND OUT THE
ANSWER.This consists of:
• Elements of drugs (whose are they)
• A main character in despair (what happened)
• Eerie score (why is that there)
• Then a dead body (how did that happen).
• Leitmotif with the hoodie (subliminal)
These are all themes that could captivate the audience as all connote a story line that would contain a high
use of suspense. The way in which we implemented this acted as a teaser as it did not reveal the true
intent.
DRUGS
As mentioned, we have administered the use of narcotics within our project. This is quite a controversial
topic in the context it is being used for as it is portraying narcotics as harmful as opposed to recreational.
The consumer may decode this text as interesting as this is a taboo topic especially for the generation that
is watching. Not only because this is drugs but because it is a use of hard drugs. This then both addresses
and attracts the audience since this is a relatively new topic in their field as the younger years should have
less experience with these products and the usage of these products.
CHARACTER IN DESPAIR
This low shot shows the character in despair – as mentioned. However, the sequence does not elaborate
on why he is in this position on how he got there. The low shot shows the character in a position of
dominance as he is omnipotent over the viewer – however they do not know why he is dominant but he
possesses dominant proxemics over the viewer.
This attracts the viewer as the slow motion edit shows emphasises this point and creates suspense. The
sequence then cuts off without explaining how he got into that situation. This attracts the viewers as this
use of Midas Res would make the viewer question how and why he got there – therefore a convention of
thriller.
This addresses the audience (established in question 3 they would be 15+) as this is a typical teenager,
therefore asking the audience to conclude their own codes.
E.G a student may ask if its exam stress, a teen who has troubles at home may feel it may relate to that, or
even in extreme cases – someone involved in the same situation as the character may relate to it.
EERIE MUSIC
Score
Sting
The crew and I have decided to implement the use of a score. This has allowed us to create an effect that
draws the consumer in since an ambience is created. The score (available to be played above) creates the
effect that there is something going on and creates an empty feeling – thus captivating in the consumer
since they may wish to find out what is going on. The stings are used to further emphasise this tone set
since it generates an uneasy feeling.
This addresses the audience as this creates the suspense that the consumers that have a preference for
thrillers tend to expect. This is also further emphasised in the use of a character in despair and the
administration of a dead body.

DEAD BODY
The sequence contains a dead body, however it is revealed slowly creating suspense as the consumer does
not gather straight away that the body is dead. This attracts the audience since they would wish to find out
what is going on in the sequence.
Furthermore, the body had open eyes which suggests an uneasy death and thus sets the exposition as the
viewer may wish to find out the whole narrative.
MOTIF
A huge convention of thriller has been implemented as there was a motif established. There is a
reestablishment of a character as someone walks away – suspiciously wearing the same clothing as the
character This definitely addresses the audience as the mode of a thriller enables the user to think as
much as they can and involves them in the plot. This also establishes the ‘twist’ that most (if not all)
thrillers will contain.
