Question 2: How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
Within our Advanced Portfolio, as well as creating
a short film as our final product, we had to design 2
ancillary pieces; a film poster and a review. At the
beginning of the project, as a group we based our
market and product research on the basis that we
would be creating a horror film. We didn’t realise
that the ancillary tasks had to relate to the final
product therefore all our research was analysis of
products relating to horror films and conventions of
horror. This meant that later on in the project, we
had to go back to our ancillary tasks and design
them to match our short film.
I used a consistent house style on my ancillary
tasks using the same colours and fonts where
possible. I researched conventions of comedy and
found that a colour often used was green for
example on the Ted film poster, so I used this colour
consistently on my ancillary tasks. I also used the
colour yellow because it is a vibrant colour that attracts attention but is also easy on the eye
for the viewer to look at.
The image on my film poster uses direct address to draw in the attention of the audience
and portray the main characters personality; fun and confident. I kept the layout of both my
posters and review simple to portray the plot of the film; simple and straight forward.
I used the same font for the title of the film on both ancillaries to build consistency but

also because they were comical and portrayed the comedy within the film.
I wrote the film review informally and the language used relates to the language used in
the film; some slang words etc. The language used can be related to by the target audience
and is relevant to the idea of the film.
Creating synergy between my ancillary tasks and my final product was difficult because I
created them at different times and used different software. Also, because the first ancillary
pieces I created didn’t relate to our final film, the images I used weren’t of a high quality.
