FEMALE ROLE
In most thriller films females are stereotypically represented as the
victim, therefore being shown to be very young and vulnerable. They
are also often shown to have the opposite characteristics of the
antagonist and usually have blonde hair as the ‘damsel in distress’ is
usually blonde. Therefore for my film opening I chosen to follow
through with this stereotype, with my female character being a young
girl with blonde hair in order to allow the audience to create an opinion
of my character, due to they will instantly recognise her as being the
‘victim’. My female character is also wearing red lipstick which
represents the male gaze theory as stereotypically the colour red
connotes love and attraction, however also danger. Therefore
foreshadowing the fact that she is going to become very vulnerable and
weak toward the male character. Moreover due to my character also
having blonde hair, this also stereotypically represents her as being
‘dumb’ , therefore making her look incapable and weak and adds to the
narrative of her being unaware of the fact she is being stalked and not
being able to help herself of escape.
MALE ROLE
In most thriller films males are either stereotypically represented as being the
villain or the hero. They tend to focus mainly on there physical physique,
therefore portraying them to look very strong and powerful. In my case my male
character is stalking a young girl who lives across the road from him, this
immediately portrays my male character as being the antagonist. It also allows
the audience to create an opinion of my character, due to they will instantly
recognise him as being the villain. Moreover my male character is dressed in
dark black clothing as the colour black connotes danger, mystery and evil,
however he is also dressed very casual in order to camouflage him into the
idea of being a ‘normal’ man. My characters physical physique is also very big
built which portrays him to look very strong and powerful.
ETHNICITY
Throughout my research I found that almost every thriller film had awhite
main character which portraysthestereotypesin ethnicity. Thereforedueto
thiscommon responseI choseto follow through with thisidea, thereforeall of
my charactersarewhite, British I also choseto usethesameracein order to
challengethedifferent stereotypesagainst each other, asboth of my characters
play theoppositerole, dueto my malecharacter being theantagonist and my
femalecharacter being my protagonist. However theroleof ethnicity doesn’t
really play alargerolein my opening scene, asI haven't really focused my
narrativearound theideaof it.
AGE
For my opening scene my target audience was teenagers, therefore I decided to
have my main character as a teenager who is 17, in order to allow the audience to
be able to relate to my film as this is the idea I wanted. This is because I wanted
to get the message to young teenagers of being aware of the people around you
and how in todays society men are represented as being dangerous. In most
thriller films, young teenage girls are also represented as being very weak and
powerful, therefore I wanted to continue with this representation. Moreover it
will also be more appealing to the audience if they are able to interact with the
film. However the villain in my opening scene is much older, he is in his later
adult hood. I chose my villain to be this age due to the fact that old men are
stereotypically thought of as being promiscuous towards young girls.
