The document discusses different forms of media created to advertise a short film called "Father's Day", including a film poster, magazine review, and the film itself. The key messages aimed to portray the film as dark, dramatic, mysterious and enticing through the chosen imagery and text. Specifically, the poster and review used similar dark color schemes, lighting effects, and character images to pique audience interest and link the advertisements back to the short film. Taken together, the different forms of media were meant to progressively reveal more information about the film while still leaving questions unanswered, driving audiences to want to watch the film itself.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

5. What message did I want to send the audience with
these different forms of media?
When creating my film, poster and review I had to think about the message that
I wanted to portray to the audience. The message I wanted to portray was the
film being dark, dramatic, mysterious and enticing. I wanted my audience to ask
questions, making them want to see it.
I also wanted to show my audience that the film would be interesting, I
delivered these messages in both my poster and review by showing each of the
characters, I chose an image of my protagonist with a worried and frightened
leading the audience to question why he is looking this way, the picture of my
antagonist is with a menacing facial expression leading the audience to wonder
why he is angry. I chose to place a picture of my protagonists younger self to
show that we had used interesting techniques like flashbacks in the film. I I
used a dark colour scheme of tonal reds and black, to portray the mood, along
with some white to make the text visible.
6. What is my film’s unique selling point?
The unique selling point of my film Father’s day would be the storyline and the
way that this is portrayed. The use of flashbacks in our film is used to educate
the audience about the character, and having these flashback mid action is
certainly unique and would entertain and entice the audience. Another unique
selling point for my film would be the unusual dynamic between father and son.
Audiences would expect this kind of relationship to be kind and caring but we
have switched that stereotype and made father and son bitter enemies,
something I feel that audience members would be interested in seeing. The film
is constantly making my audience ask questions like ‘Why is he being chased?’
and this is another USP of my film!
7. What modes of address does my film use?
I used different modes of address when creating my film to make it as effective as
possible. I used media language like lighting, sound, camerawork and other things
like colour scheme and imagery. When choosing to use these types of address I
looked at which were most conventional within thriller films. For example I used
low-key lighting throughout the dramatic scenes of the piece in order to build
tension in the scene as well as give the piece a dark quality overall. We also had a
flashback in our film and the audience knew this because we used a blinding flash
effect along with a sound effect to indicate the going back in time. Fore the
duration of the flashback I used a filter in the editing stage which de-saturated the
images to make them appear older and to show the difference between past and
present.
The whole of my short film has an underlying quality of normality, put across to the
audience through the imagery with the use of an everyday location and normal
people, for example. This enables them to relate more to the story and connect
with it. When the characters speak in the short film the language is quite
articulated and I believe this is what an audience of our age group would want to
hear. They wouldn’t want to be spoon fed the story, people like to have to do some
thinking themselves in order to deduce what is happening.
8. What modes of address does your film poster use and
what is it’s unique selling point?
The modes of address my poster uses are similar to that of my short film, I used colour
scheme, lighting, layout and font style. To make my poster look as realistic as
possible I researched professional film posters to gain insight into what my finished
product should look like. The image I used was the most important mode of
address because the facial expressions on the characters will lead my audience to
ask questions about why they appear this way I would also say that this is the USP
of the poster because it is the most effective part of the poster. I enhanced the
image with a low key lighting effect and red filter/tint to create the impression of
darkness and evil which is an underlying theme in the film. The text style was also
an important choice because this makes the poster look professional. I chose to
place the actors names underneath them on the poster below their photos to
show clearly who is playing who. The colour scheme is red, black and some text
and white. Just like with the photo the red text gives it that dark quality.
9. What modes of address does your film magazine
review use and what is it’s unique selling point?
When creating my film magazine review I wanted to make sure that it was similar to
my film poster so that audience members could recognise they were related and
so I decided to use similar modes of address. In my review I did the same thing as
with my poster and looked at professional examples in order to get an idea of what
mine needed to look like. I would say that the USP of my review is definitely the
image, just like on my poster. I chose to make the main image of the protagonist
and this covers the majority of the page which I found was conventional for
reviews and grabs the audiences attention. The modes of address used in my
review include colour scheme, I made the colour scheme almost the same as the
poster, being mostly black white and red to create that dark mood, the language
used is formal, informative and fun to read, it really provokes a reaction and makes
you want to see the film. The lettering is bold and easy to read and the little quote
square is very effective.
10. How is your poster and review similar to your short film
and how do they represent it?
My poster and review are similar to my short film in that they utilise the same low key
lighting effect (dark and contrasted) as in the most dramatic scene of the film. I
have also used the same images and colour schemes across the board to link back
to the film. My poster has our production logo on it which is shown at the
beginning of the short film which links the two together. The distinct similarities
between the poster and the review represent the short film in a very effective way
because they have given the film a recognisable format (with the colours for
example) which when an audience see, will instantly know they link to this film.
11. How do they work together to advertise my short film?
The three work well together as a group to advertise my film because they each build
up to the finished product, addressing the audience in different ways. The poster
being the first piece of advertisement this addresses the audience first and reveals
very little, the strong tagline and image are all they have to go on, leading them to
ask questions and want to find out more. The magazine is the second step, still
utilising the same colours and photos but this time with text giving hints into the
narrative and quotes from the actors revealing just a little bit more of the film but
not enough to ruin it, making them ask more questions and hopefully making
them want to see it. The short film itself brings all of the advertisement together
utilising some of the same techniques and revealing the story.
