Evaluation Q2
1. How effective is the combination
of your main product and the
ancillary texts?
Jamie Hollins
2. Ancillary Texts
❖ Ancillary texts are integral in the process of creating a film. Even though there
other means of promoting a film, we decided to create a poster and a radio
trailer. The reason for this was so that the promotion for the film covered both
the visual and audio elements that are present in the film. We relied on the
script and treatment for the film to create the texts, even though these
changed during the production of the film. Due to us being clear about the
genre for the film, we were able to make sure that the message we wished to
portray to the audience was appropriate for the genre of the film and wouldn't
feel forced. In the film we attempted to create a sense of mystery and intrigue,
also we wished for the film to act as a way of discussing mental health due to
the possibility that the main character suffering from schizophrenia. Therefore
this sense of intrigue needed to be shown in the texts created to promote the
film as if they did not then they could be seen as misleading the audience.
3. Radio Trailer
❖ Radio trailers are one of the oldest forms of promoting a film and are still
relevant today. In 2012 there was around 700 radio stations operating in
the UK. A number of these stations are owned and operated by the BBC
who do not run adverts on their stations due to their funding coming from
the TV license fees. Radio trailers are an effective way of promoting films
and of media products due number of people you could potentially reach
due to the proliferation of the radio during the 20th and 21st centuries. As
radio trailers only contain audio, we decided to use a line from the film as
the focal point of the trailer with information about the film and the plot on
either side of this line. This gave the potential audience an idea about the
film along with information without giving the plot away.
4. Radio trailer continued
❖ The radio trailer contained:
❖ A line from the film
❖ Music that is used in the film
❖ Information about the films release
❖ Brief overview of the film
❖ These three aspects are the most important as they give the potential
audience all the information they need without giving away the any major
aspects of the plot or any twists that are in the film that would spoil it for the
audience
❖ Link to trailer https://youtu.be/SRTh9Vbz1cA
5. Poster
❖ The poster design took time to create due the difference in ideas that we
had. We created different posters, such as teaser posters which I created.
The simplistic nature of the posters which I created were deliberately
created that way as a way to create the intrigue that we hoped was
prevalent in the film. These teasers were used as research. The final
poster resembles posters that are seen in theatres, in terms of layout. The
poster also contains satirical quotes which is similar to what you would
potentially see on a film poster for a black comedy.
6. The progression of the poster
First teaser poster
that was created
First poster that
contained the
name of the film
First poster that
contained names
and a photo of a
character
The final poster that
was agreed on
because of the layout
and the way it
resembles a
traditional theatrical
poster
7. Effectiveness of the texts
❖ The texts were effective in promoting the film as they were able to reach
the demographic that was our audience and also intrigued people of other
demographics that we were not targeting.
❖ I feel that the texts fulfilled there purpose of giving as little information
about the film without seeming evasive to the audience, particularly the
radio trailer.
❖ The time that we dedicated to both the poster and the radio trailer reflected
on the time and care we took on all aspects of the film to create the best
possible product.
