How Does Your Media

Particular Social
Groups?
QUESTION 2
On The Cover
                         THE MODEL
I have included a picture of a girl who appears fits the
social group I am targeting. On the cover the model is
posed with quite a serious look, but is still friendly and
inviting. She has her hand on her hips which makes her
look posed and fierce, still suiting the social group, but
also makes her more eye-catching and appealing. I have
dressed her in a navy blue vintage jumper – so she is
fitting the stereotype of my target audience, wearing bright
is also wearing a necklace which isn’tanother stereotypical feature of my audience,
red lipstick – a conventional feature, but it matches the
colour of her lipstick, making her appeal more ‘made up’ and suitable for the
                           but she
cover. I later used this ‘red’ colour to base the rest of the magazine’s colour
MISE-EN-
scheme around.
SCENE
The mise-en-scene of the cover is entirely plain. It is a neutral beige/light colour
which means the model stands out well against it. This helps represent the target
audience as they are stereotypically quite plain and natural, and shows they have
REPRESENTATION OF THE TARGET
simple surroundings.
AUDIENCE
My cover represents my target audience in a number of ways. From the simplicity of
the clothes
and make-up to the plain, natural coloured background. These are all stereotypical
features that are associated with the target audience.
The only contrast in representations of the target audience that I have
made is probably the brightness of the necklace, as the target audience is generally
stereotyped to wearing simple gold necklaces with a single pendant, rather than a
bright statement piece. However I did this to ‘make a statement,’ and give the model
a bit of an edge so that she is more eye-catching, yet still appealing to the target
audience.
DOES THE REPRESENTATION CHALLENGE OR SUPPORT
DOMINANT IDEAS?
The front cover of my magazine generally supports dominant ideas of my social
group. The only part that would challenge would be the bright, loud necklace.
Double Page
        Spread
THE MODEL
The model on my double page spread fits
the social group I am targeting. She is
wearing neutral coloured vintage clothing, a
simple necklace and her hair is natural. She
is innocently posed, with her hands behind
her back and her knee slightly raised, as this
makes it posed whilst still being
simple. The colours of her clothing also match the natural colours of her
surroundings, tying everything together nicely.
MISE-EN-
SCENE
The mise-en-scene of the double page spread is a forest, with the trunks of a tree,
leaves on the floor and plants growing around the trees. This relates to the
‘natural’ appearance of the stereotypical target audience. It also suggests the
model is creative, and interested in nature, another aspect of the target audience.
REPRESENTATION OF THE TARGET
AUDIENCE
The double page spread represents my target audience in a number of ways.
From the simplicity of the clothing and pose of the model, to the natural colours of
her clothes and surroundings. Being in a forest with a vintage jumper on is just a
stereotypical ‘indie’ cliché.
This page doesn’t really challenge the representation of my target audience at all.
Every feature seems to link in with the stereotypes and will appeal to the social
group in one way or another.
DOES THE REPRESENTATION CHALLENGE OR SUPPORT
DOMINANT IDEAS?
The double page spread entirely support dominant ideas of my social group in many
ways, as I have already mentioned.
