Media research codes and conventions - magazine covers saramotolo
The document discusses codes and conventions used in magazine front covers. It analyzes covers of Billboard, Q, and Billboard magazines. Some conventions it identifies include using bright colors and images to draw attention to key words, direct address to readers to create engagement, and mid shots of artists to emphasize fashion style and appeal to audiences. Covers are designed to attract readers by fulfilling cognitive needs for knowledge, diversion, and conversation starters about artists.
The document compares and contrasts the key similarities and differences between the author's double page magazine spread design and an example design. Some key similarities are that both designs use a natural background with the model on the side to stretch across the whole page. Both models have headwear and expressionless faces to give a hip-hop feel. The main differences are that one design takes place during the day while the other is at night, and the author's design includes a skyline background and external lighting rather than natural light. The author's design is meant to represent young adult males aged 16-21 by focusing on serious topics and dull colors over bright ones, and clothing styles popular among artists like Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
The media product represents teenage girls as vulnerable, powerless, lonely and defeated. It portrays the protagonist as a stereotypical teenager through her blonde ponytail hairstyle, basic makeup, and school uniform. The large green parka she wears helps reinforce her as hiding from the world. The actress was chosen to draw sympathy from the target teenage audience as they can relate to her.
This document discusses the representation of social groups in a media product. It summarizes the creator's choices in representing their target audience through the front cover image of their magazine called "Alpha". The target audience is described as older teenagers and younger adults interested in indie music. Characteristics of the front cover model were chosen to represent and appeal to this group, including minimal makeup and outfit, direct eye contact, and a pose expressing power and mystery. The magazine content and price point were also designed to be accessible and relevant to the target audience.
This document analyzes how a media product represents social groups through its use of images, language, and ideology. Shots of a young female artist are used on the cover and throughout to attract a younger, male audience while also appealing to young women. Stereotypical images of attractive female artists are employed but counterbalanced with atmospheric, non-sexualized shots. The language is informal to connect with youth while representing aspirational social classes. By directly addressing the target audience and using relatable artists, the product aims to create loyal fans who identify with the portrayed path to success.

Question 2
1. How Does Your Media
Product Represent
Particular Social
Groups?
QUESTION 2
2. On The Cover
THE MODEL
I have included a picture of a girl who appears
fits the social group I am targeting. On the cover
the model is posed with quite a serious look, but
is still friendly and inviting. She has her hand on
her hips which makes her look posed and fierce,
still suiting the social group, but also makes her
more eye-catching and appealing. I have
dressed her in a navy blue vintage jumper – so
she is fitting the stereotype of my target
audience, wearing bright red lipstick – another
stereotypical feature of my audience, but she is
also wearing a necklace which isn’t a
conventional feature, but it matches the colour
of her lipstick, making her appeal more ‘made
up’ and suitable for the cover. I later used this
‘red’ colour to base the rest of the magazine’s
colour scheme around.
3. MISE-EN-
SCENE
The mise-en-scene of the cover is entirely plain. It is a neutral beige/light colour
which means the model stands out well against it. This helps represent the target
audience as they are stereotypically quite plain and natural, and shows they have
simple surroundings.
REPRESENTATION OF THE TARGET
AUDIENCE
My cover represents my target audience in a number of ways. From the simplicity of
the clothes and make-up to the plain, natural coloured background. These are all
stereotypical features that are associated with the target audience.
The only contrast in representations of the target audience that I have
made is probably the brightness of the necklace, as the target audience is generally
stereotyped to wearing simple gold necklaces with a single pendant, rather than a
bright statement piece. However I did this to ‘make a statement,’ and give the model
a bit of an edge so that she is more eye-catching, yet still appealing to the target
audience.
4. DOES THE REPRESENTATION CHALLENGE OR SUPPORT
DOMINANT IDEAS?
The front cover of my magazine generally supports dominant ideas of my social
group. The only part that would challenge would be the bright, loud necklace.
5. Double Page Spread
THE MODEL
The model on my double page spread fits the social group I am targeting. She
is wearing neutral coloured vintage clothing, a simple necklace and her hair is
natural. She is innocently posed, with her hands behind her back and her
knee slightly raised, as this makes it posed whilst still being simple. The
colours of her clothing also match the natural colours of her surroundings,
tying everything together nicely.
6. MISE-EN-
SCENE
The mise-en-scene of the double page spread is a forest, with the trunks of a tree,
leaves on the floor and plants growing around the trees. This relates to the
‘natural’ appearance of the stereotypical target audience. It also suggests the
model is creative, and interested in nature, another aspect of the target audience.
REPRESENTATION OF THE TARGET
AUDIENCE
The double page spread represents my target audience in a number of ways.
From the simplicity of the clothing and pose of the model, to the natural colours of
her clothes and surroundings. Being in a forest with a vintage jumper on is just a
stereotypical ‘indie’ cliché.
This page doesn’t really challenge the representation of my target
audience at all. Every feature seems to link in with the stereotypes and will appeal
to the social group in one way or another.
7. DOES THE REPRESENTATION CHALLENGE OR SUPPORT
DOMINANT IDEAS?
The double page spread entirely support dominant ideas of my social group in many
ways, as I have already mentioned.
