Digital Technology
The term Digital Technologies is used to describe the
use of digital resources to effectively find, analyse,
create, communicate, and use information in a
digital context. This encompasses the use of web 2.0
tools, digital media tools, programming tools and
software applications.
 Advantages - The emergence of digital technology
has affected our lives in many ways, from how we
receive our daily news to the quality of our mass
media entertainment and the ways we conduct our
personal communications. We use digital technology
to maximize our productivity and enhance our
quality of life. Many of us now depend on digital
technology.
How has your creativity developed through using
digital technology to complete your production?
 The use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness.
 The term Digital Technologies is used to describe the use of digital resources to effectively find, analyse, create,
communicate, and use information in a digital context. This encompasses the use of web 2.0 tools, digital media
tools, programming tools and software applications.
To take the pictures for the magazine I'm creating I used a Canon SLR to take good quality images that would look vastly
professional and as though it were taken by real photographers who do magazine shoots. I took the images in one of the
media rooms at My school. In the room there was already a camera that was set up with the lights so whenever a picture
was taken the lights flashed. There was a white screen making the photoshoot look more realistic and professional as the
tend to use white screens in the magazine industry and whenever there is a photoshoot being done. The lights in the
room ensured that my photos wouldn't be dark which would make it easier when it came to editing the images on
Photoshop. If my model was sat on the floor I would have to adjust the lights to face the ground to ensure the image was
lighted up well.
Software
The computer software I’m using to create my magazine is Indesign. When making my magazine in year 11 I used
Photoshop; I found Indesign to be much easier to use for creating a magazine and it was recommended. Indesign is more
designed for magazines as it presents your magazine in a magazine format; whereas Photoshop is better for editing
pictures which is why I am using Photoshop to edit my model and edit out blemishes. However I did use photoshop to edit
my images and make them look professional. Using photoshop I could edit my images in ways that could make my
photography look less amateurish; making images lighter when the lighting wasn’t perfect on the set. Using photoshop I
could change transform images and make them look more professional. Using websites like Prezi i could show the
research I had done on my own and develop the m further using their editing and tools settings. I used Youtube to upload
videos I had made from the photoshoot. I used Nexus font to add fonts to my magazine that word and other programs
didn’t offer, doing this i could get more creative with the texts i could use. Using Photoshop i could also make a contact
sheet which allowed me to look at several images at the same time, making it easier to choose images i would eventually
use. I used PowerPoint to put images next to each other so I could decide which one would look more appropriate for my
magazine and to make my target audience more interested in the magazine. I used the internet to look up images i could
use for inspiration. e.g. poses and clothing hipsters would wear. With Photoshop I was also able to change saturation
levels which helped make my images better. With Indesign I was able to add page numbers, together with the guidelines
which helped me place text and images in suitable positions. I used Voki to make my Blogger page look more interesting
when i was putting my ideas down. I used Blogger to write down my thoughts, put down notes from lessons , add course
work and in tern track my development. I used the internet to get the logos for such websites such as Facebook and
Twitter. I used word to type up my article, in addition to being able to see how many words I’d used and needed to add.
Creativity
the use of imagination or original ideas to create
something; inventiveness.
Using creativity I had different ideas on what the images
would look like and where I would shoot them. A skate
park was used in the photo-shoot and a place in London
with art painted on. The poses my model did were ones
I thought about myself by intending on her suiting the
music magazine genre itself.
Research and Planning
 Research- investigation into and study of materials and
sources in order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions.
 Planning- process of thinking about and organizing the
activities required to achieve a desired goal
For research I looked at existing magazines such as NME which
related to my magazines and looked for ideas in their
magazine that I could use in mine.
For planning I looked at how I could lay out my magazine using
what I thought my audiences would prefer a magazine layout
to be e.g. if they prefer looking at more pictures or reading
more content.
Post Production
Work done on a film or recording after filming or recording has
taken place
I edited the images in order for them to look like they were of
a higher standard using Photoshop. After the Photo shoot i
started to look at how I'd want the rest of my magazine to
look like. I looked at existing magazines and incorporated
their layouts into my magazine. Having a layout that I
wanted to use for my magazine made it easy for me to
think about where to add the images I had taken from the
indoor and outdoor Photo shoot. Having a contact sheet
helped my with the choosing of my pictures. With Indesign I
was able to put my images in after they had been edited
using Photoshop. With PowerPoint I was able to put the
images I wanted to use and keep them into that order so I
would remember where I wanted to place them in Indesign.
Using Conventions From Real
World Texts
 Convention- a rule, method or practice established by usage
o Representation
o Technical aspects (mise-en-scene, cinematography/photography, editing and sound)
o Narrative (story (ideology), characters, setting)
Media theory
 Semiotics: study of signs and symbols – are any common to the texts you have made?
 Feminism: typical representation of males and females in your texts
 Audience effect and address: hypodermic needle, uses and gratifications, Stuart Hall
I put in logos such as twitter, facebook, youtube and tumblr, which meant that my target
audience would be interested in reading the magazine and going on the online websites as these
are some of the websites that are being used by young people. Using both masculine and
feminine colours I could attract both genders. I looked up articles by magazines such as NME and
KERRANG and noticed the text that was being used. The text was informal and had swear words,
as a result i decided to incorporate some of the language used into my own text and added the
occasional swear word to match with what my target audience is used to reading when they pick
up a magazine.
