IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA

CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?

The opening of my video
The opening sequence is of my main character
in the music video. The first image you see is of
Jas centre screen, which indicates she's the
central character of the video. The shot slowly
zooms out from an extreme close up shot,
starting of blurry into focus on her face. Used a
young female as the main characters, simply to
match the female vocals, also from watching
other dance music videos they focus around a
single main characters.The opening identifies
the main character straight away, and as she's
lip syncing to the song, she is representing the
artist.
Location
This image is of the location I used. The forest was chosen as it
creates a mysterious atmosphere. As my video doesn’t follow a
clear story, I wanted to keep it very mysterious and make the
audience wonder why she was there. I used different places in
the forest to keep it interesting, by using the space and dancer
in different ways. For example, the different use of trees and
experimenting to see what I could get Jas to move around them.
The second location used was Jasmines house, which was used
at the end of my video to show her journey to the forest. You
could argue it does conform to the genres music video, as I had
seen many video set outside in asethic natural landscapes. For
example Sub Focus’s ‘Out of the Blue’ is set by the sea.
It doesn’t follow
conventions of a
generic dance music
video as I would
have needed to use
a range of different
locations used.
Costumes and
props
The costume of my
dancer is wearing white
jeans, grey top and her
hair down freely. I chose
the white jeans as they
would represent her
purity and innocence, and
going into the forest it
would matter getting
them dirty due to her
breakdown. The costume
is casual as its in the day
time, also including a coat
and scarf.The costume
isn’t revealing which
doesn’t conform to the
genres music video
stereotypes. It doesn't
draw too much attention
to the costume as its not
the main focus of the
video
The light shown in the picture above
was a torch I had decided to use this day
of filming as it wads so dark and rainy.
Using it underneath the trees to which
jasmine follows underneath makes it
look like a mysterious light source or as
if she's following the light. Its open to
the audiences opinion of what it means.
Camera work
and editing
• From watching other Dance
/Drum and Bass videos I noticed
they either have a vague storyline
relating to the lyrics. Similarly,
my video doesn’t follow a clear
storyline. I tried using a variety of
camera angles to make it as
unique as possible.
Style of Video The style of the video is conceptual.
The idea that my music video is based around is
Jas going crazy and letting herself free into the
forest. It’s a built up of anger and she's finally able
to get away from it all and express her emotions.
As it was conceptual it needed to be unusual,
which hopefully I have done. The idea on the
screen was to keep it strange and visually
pleasing. Many of the Drum and Bas videos I had
watched didn’t really make sense, the storyline
being conceptual. For example, Netsky’s ‘Running
Low’ shows a girl trapped in a room with unusual
activities happening around her
Storyline From watching other Dance /Drum and Bass
videos I noticed they either have a vague
storyline relating to the lyrics. Similarly, my
video doesn’t follow a clear storyline. To
begin we see Jas in the forest in various
places, singing to the lyrics and dancing. She
has a minor breakdown to correspond with
the music. At the end we see her, looking into
her mirror, storming out her house, ditching
her coat and walking into the woods. Clearing
up to the audience her journey into the
woods, there is still mystery. By not having a
clear storyline leaves the audience with
curiosity to what really went on. I didn’t want
to create a plot, my video was intended to not
make sense.
Genre • The genre of the song is in the Drum and
Bass category, which is present on screen
with the shots cutting on to the beat .
• There is also a lot of dance included in the
video , suggesting it’s a dance song. It
doesn’t quite make a dance video as it
would need more dancers, more locations
etc.
• The main conventions of drum and bass
videos either consisted of live events and
lots of shots at parties/clubs, I avoided
this convention as I felt the song had
much more meaning behind the lyrics to
be filming people partying.
How the
artist is
portrayed
• Nneka, the vocals of the track , she sings about being
angry and upset with the world. This song and many of
her others stress the issues of capitalism and war, and
moral messages .The track is strong and emotional
song, especially for its genre of drum and bass . To
present this, my actor Jas is showing this emotion
through her dance and lip syncing to the song, she
portraying the artist through the video. Jasmine
dancing representing the anger Nnkea feels. She had
to fit the idea of the music video with the emotion of
the song as this is the way the artist intended. I had
seen lots of music videos use lip syncing and felt it in
most cases, portrayed the artist in a positive way,
which I why I did the same. Also using long shots and
close up shots of the character was another convention
I followed by, to focus on the main character in my
video.
Special effects
used
I used plenty of special effects to add to make
all the shots interesting. The effects made the
music video conceptual, it creates a strange
effect to represent the feelings of the
character, for example the ghosting effect
created an obscure vision. Also using the
transparency tool showing two shots – as seen
in the top picture, created the idea of having
some much happening in her mind. I liked the
transparency theme, so I kept the same thing
in mind when creating my ancillary texts.
