This document discusses the role and responsibilities of a makeup artist for theatrical productions. It explains that makeup artists must design makeup looks that fit the overall aesthetic vision of the show and enhance facial features to be visible from a distance under stage lighting. Makeup artists often train performers to apply their own makeup for quick changes. They also specialize in special effects makeup using techniques like bald caps, wounds, aging effects. Proper lighting is important for testing makeup designs to ensure it photographs and appears as intended under the actual stage lighting conditions.

2. Make- up designer in the theatre
• The makeup designer ensures the performer on stage has the
suitable makeup before they appear on stage or audience. The
makeup must fit the overall design of the show, creating a look
to fit the desired illusion
• Stage makeup must work with the stage lighting to highlight
the performers face which makes the facial expressions visible
to the audience from a distance. Mainly focussing on defining
the eyes and lips as well as contouring facial bones.
3. • Performers generally do their makeup themselves while
makeup artists help them, and if needed help them with
quick changes
• This will allow my make-up team and I to train the cast to do
their own makeup, especially the ensemble, as the whole
cats will need big theatrical makeup before they go on stage.
The make up must fit the design of the show and the
character so they must be trained under guidance so its
similar to the rest of the show.
4. SFX makeup effects
• The use of special effects techniques enhancing physical features to
emphasise metaphorical features.
• Make up artists specialise in creating special theatrical effects such as bald
caps, wounds or blood.
• There are many professional special effects makeup kits avaibable, some of
this could be incorporated into the show. A test should be done before any
final decisions are made. Such as the character, Poppa, he has to look old.
Researching how to age people or adding any facial hair might be a good
idea.
5. Role as makeup artist
•“You need to develop a high calibre of skills through
continuous learning.Techniques keep changing.”
• “ I have to be resourceful and adaptable. Every job is
different.”
•You would work closely with production designers,
costume designers, camera and lighting crew, and
performers
6. To become a make-up artist, you will need:
• creativity and imagination
• good communication and people skills
• a tactful manner stamina,
• patience and concentration the ability to work well under
pressure excellent attention to detail
• good punctuality and reliability
• a willingness to work long hours when necessary good
teamwork skills an interest in current and historical fashions.
7. •In pre production make-up designers work with the
director, the lighting team and the production designer
to ensure that the make-up fits with the overall visual
concept of the production and that it looks correct on
camera
•During production they apply the make-up to the actors.
They must also check on continuity on camera, ensuring
that actors look the same in every take.
8. •They work closely with actors. They have to be able to
put people at ease and to respond to the different ways
in which actors like to prepare before going on camera.
•To be a make-up designer, it takes a lot of perseverance
to get into the business. The route in is normally through
a make-up course and through assisting other more
senior make up professionals.
9. How Lighting effects Makeup on Stage
• Makeup presents special color problems. It's special because makeup usually
involves last minute decisions and many actors don't realize that even the most
natural-looking makeup reflects a color of its own.
• As indicated earlier, it is easier to change color filters than costumes or scenery. But
it's even easier to adapt the makeup to the overall color scheme.
• To properly develop makeup for the production, try this simple technique: Equip
the dressing rooms with color filters that will dominate on stage. It would be best if
you could use a theatrical fixture, such as a small fresnel, but if you can't, any kind
of high intensity lamp will do
• Another good idea is to ask one of the principal actors or actresses to appear on
stage, in makeup, some days before the first performance.Try the actual lighting
on that performer. If the effect is poor, there's still time to suggest changes in the
makeup. Most of the cast, particularly in school productions, will be using
essentially the same makeup so changes suggested for one actor should suit them
all.
