Jerome Blake analyzes how their group's three media projects for a music video, magazine advertisement, and CD packaging utilize and challenge conventions of real media in the R&B and hip-hop genres. The music video draws from conventions like minimal female clothing, tattoos and jewelry for men, and sexualized imagery but aims to challenge typical objectification of women. Elements like lighting, camera angles, editing, and representation of gender draw from examples like "Miss Independent" while updating representations. The analysis considers how conventions were both followed and updated to resonate with audiences.
Our three media products - a music video, magazine advertisement, and DigiPak - use conventions of the R&B and hip-hop genres to relate to our target audience. The music video represents men through tattoos, jewelry, and occasional toplessness, and women through minimal clothing, hair, makeup and heels, though our video challenges the objectification of women. Elements like lighting, camera angles, editing on beat, and symbolism through color and imagery draw from real R&B/hip-hop media to develop mood and meaning. While drawing from conventions, our products also develop them by providing alternative portrayals of gender.

Our music video challenges some conventions of music videos while following others. We did not include narratives like some theorists suggest but manipulated lyrics to comment on society. We used typical shots like medium close-ups but did not use close-ups or extreme close-ups. We incorporated transitions and editing to match the music but lacked some camera movements. Costumes avoided objectification but locations reinforced the theme. Sound used only non-diegetic elements. While departing from theories of music as shamanism, we showed the artist's experiences through her actions.

Conformity to these conventions helps ensure the music video will be familiar and appealing to its target hip-hop audience.
The document provides an evaluation of a media product (a music video) and how it uses and challenges conventions of real media. The music video uses conventions such as including a popular song, featuring party/club settings typical of the genre, and using various camera shots and fast-paced editing. However, it challenges conventions by not including a studio setting, having characters in everyday clothing rather than costumes, and having an abstract narrative rather than a clear performance narrative. Overall, the evaluation argues the music video both uses and challenges conventions of the pop/R&B genre to create a unique media product.
Our media production uses conventions from R&B music videos such as scenes from Usher's "My Boo" video, but also develops the genre in some ways. Specific shots and angles are borrowed, like much of the video being filmed outdoors. However, we introduce a story element not seen in the original by including a black and white reminiscing scene. The entire video is also filmed outside, challenging conventions. We represent warmth and closure through nature scenes and winter clothing. Gender roles are less stereotypical with only two main characters instead of many scantily-clad women.
The document discusses the evaluation of a media portfolio that includes a music video and print work for an R&B artist. It summarizes how the media product uses conventions of real music videos, such as a focus on style over substance and portraying the artist as a sex symbol. While mostly sticking to conventions, it also challenges some, like setting the video in a woodland rather than beach setting. The print work also follows conventions like using the artist's image but experiments with colors and effects. Feedback showed the music video successfully portrayed the emotions of the slow song through its editing, shots and setting.
The document discusses how the music video for an R&B song by Tavonga conforms to, challenges, and develops conventions of the R&B genre. It uses typical R&B settings like an urban brick wall backdrop but also challenges conventions by filming in a house. Costumes conform to trendy urban styles but challenge conventions through Tavonga's glasses. Props like phones conform but a motif of a rose challenges conventions. Camerawork mainly conforms to typical R&B performance shots but challenges conventions through a time lapse. The digipak and magazine ad conform through layouts but challenge conventions through font, color scheme, and synergizing pieces through a rose motif.
The document discusses how the media product, a music video for the song "Retrospect", uses and develops conventions of the indie music genre. Some key ways include:
1) Using typical indie settings like bedrooms and streets for filming locations due to a low budget.
2) Employing natural, desaturated colors in editing and costumes to fit the indie aesthetic.
3) Telling a narrative story rather than being a performance-based video, while still using common shot types like close-ups to convey emotion.
4) Uploading to YouTube and using social media for promotion, matching how real indie artists distribute their work. Accessories like the album artwork and website maintain consistency in imagery and color
The document summarizes the process of creating promotional materials for an indie music project, including a music video, webpage, and digipak. It discusses following conventions of the indie genre to appeal to the target demographic, while also breaking some conventions to distinguish the project. Specific conventions that were followed include using close-ups of the artist, natural lighting, costumes representing moods, and relating the video narrative to the song lyrics. Camera techniques like dissolves and juxtapositioning shots were used to transition between scenes and time periods. Overall, the goal was to balance following genre conventions with originality to attract audiences.
My media product uses, develops and challenges conventions of real media products in several ways:
1. Themes, characters, theory, editing, locations, and cinematography are used in ways that both develop and challenge conventions. For example, the Ying and Yang theme has been used before but is given a new interpretation, and editing techniques create effects like clones interacting.

Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and ...khaledjim
The document discusses the ways in which the media producer's music video product uses and develops conventions of real music videos. It summarizes the key elements of music videos like narrative, performance, cinematography with different shots, lighting, editing, iconography, costumes and more. It provides examples from music videos like David Guetta and Eminem to explain how certain techniques were applied in the producer's own music video to both follow and challenge conventions of the genre. The producer believes their video develops conventions through its use of narrative combined with performance, which is rare but still aligns with narrative-focused videos.
The music video sticks closely to conventions of real music videos by using the lyrics to shape the storyline and protagonist. It focuses on a homeless prostitute through close-up shots capturing her emotions. Settings and costumes portray typical media representations. However, it also challenges conventions by not including the artist or lip syncing, and using an uncommon point of view shot to develop hope and connection with the audience. While most music videos clearly identify side characters, this video enhances mystery by keeping other characters ambiguous.
The music video develops conventions of real media products by using smooth transitions like fades to match the slow pace of the R&B song. Shots were edited to be in time with the song's beat. Cross fades and emerging two images were used to soften cuts and separate memories from present through black and white versus color. Close-up shots were included to represent intimacy, as seen in real R&B videos. Ending with a sensual scene alluded to romance as typical in R&B videos while avoiding nudity for appropriateness.
The music video follows conventions of the hip hop genre through its narrative focus on the relationship between a male and female artist. Elements like costume, makeup, location, cinematography, editing and sound engineering are used conventionally to portray the emotions and story. While maintaining genre conventions, some elements like lighting, iconography and camera angles are also used to further develop the narrative and themes of heartbreak. The video aims to promote the artists and their music to their target audience through an engaging performance-based concept.
The document discusses how media products use, develop, and challenge conventions and forms. It provides several examples of conventions used in music videos, including close-up shots to emphasize artists, expressive editing to match the pace and emotion of music, and layering shots to create distortion. Lighting is discussed as being used to portray the artist in a certain way. Symbolic color conventions are described as representing mood. The author's own music video and packaging are said to follow conventions of the synth pop genre through their visuals, designs, and references to other artists' successful examples.
The document discusses a music video created for Beyoncé's song "Get Me Bodied". It analyzes how the music video uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real music videos. Specifically:
- It relates to other dance music videos and the original "Get Me Bodied" video in its overall form.
- Camera angles, costumes, lighting, and location were used similarly to other music videos to develop conventions.
- However, it challenges conventions by using few props and focusing on dance moves with little lip syncing.
- Fast editing matches the upbeat tempo of the song and develops conventions of portraying mood and rhythm.
Conventions are elements that audiences expect within a genre that have been used many times before. They analyzed conventions within the indie/alternative genre for a music video project. Their video used slow motion camera work, an artistic set design with netting/organza, and makeup/costumes following a blue-green-pink color palette. They compared their work to similar artists and ensured their album artwork, website, and marketing maintained consistency with the artistic theme and genre conventions.
This document discusses how the media product develops conventions from real music videos. It uses both narrative and performance elements, with most performance shots focusing on the main performer alone to reflect the depressive lyrics. Common conventions like a mirror shot are used to express emotions and connect with audiences. The black and white effect in flashback scenes conveys emotions and song meaning. Choosing a performer with dark features portrays a distressed image linking to the lyrics. The album cover follows conventions by featuring the artist's image to attract audiences. Location shots outside also develop conventions by making the story and emotions more visual and connectable.
This document discusses how the media product uses conventions of real R&B music videos. It uses conventions like a grey scale filter to indicate emotions during a break up, close-ups to show feelings, and camera movements to involve the audience. Locations, outfits, and focal points on the artist are used to sell the artist and match conventions. The cuts match the tempo of the song. The digipak and poster continue themes from the video to link the products together and sell the artist, following conventions of real music products.
The student created a music video, album, and website for a fictional pop artist named Jayme-Lee. They researched conventions of pop music videos and incorporated elements like linking the visuals to lyrics, using performance, narrative, and concept-based scenes. Special effects like split screens and fades were used. Feedback noted the need for more dramatic scenes to balance out the positive ones. Color themes and fonts were carried through the different products to create cohesion around the artist's message of addiction. The combination of products helped tell the story and symbolism within the album.
Jerome Blake analyzes how their group's three media projects for a music video, magazine advertisement, and CD packaging utilize and challenge conventions of real media in the R&B and hip hop genres. The music video draws from conventions like minimal female clothing, tattoos and jewelry for men, and sexualization of women but aims to challenge stereotypical objectification. Elements like lighting, camera angles, editing, and representation of the female actor are used to relate to but also push boundaries from typical music video tropes. Analysis of genre conventions and application of film theories helped inform the projects' approaches.
Our record label is called Double Up Records. The name is meant to be controversial like hip-hop and R&B music. We will appeal to a narrow age range of 13-22 year olds, mainly targeting one gender. Our artist is not yet well known. As a niche label, we will use guerrilla promotional strategies like posters, free concerts, taxi and billboard ads, and web/radio advertisements to promote our starting artist.

Equipment used in this music video projectjaystarzy
This document discusses the equipment and software used to create a music video project. A Canon Powershot camera was used to capture high quality visuals. Scenes were shot using a tripod for steady shots. Final Cut Pro was used for editing as it provided necessary tools. Photoshop was utilized for magazine covers and packaging. Feedback was received on social media like Facebook and YouTube, which motivated improvements.
The video for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" established itself as one of the greatest music videos of all time through its 14-minute runtime and emphasis on visuals that matched the song's lyrics about horror. The video for Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty" generated controversy by presenting a more sexualized image of the artist and eliminating her previous wholesome persona through provocative choreography and costumes that reinforced the track's suggestive lyrics. Both videos effectively used close-up shots, choreography, and visuals to strengthen the narrative and musical elements of the songs.
The document provides an analysis of the album artwork and packaging (digipaks) for albums by J. Cole, Chris Brown, and Jay-Z. Some key points summarized:
1) The J. Cole digipak imagery depicts the artist sitting on a bench, signifying his role "on the sidelines" as he waits for his big break after being signed by Jay-Z.
2) Chris Brown's F.A.M.E digipak shows the artist using bright, colorful imagery to appeal to younger audiences, with references to his multi-talented persona.
3) Jay-Z's black album features an obscured image of the rapper, representing his humble beginnings before
The document analyzes and compares the album artwork and design of two hip hop artists, J.Cole and Chris Brown. For J.Cole's album, the front cover image depicts him sitting confidently on a bench in a sophisticated outfit, denoting his success. The background of a locker room suggests themes of waiting and the sidelines. Typography and imagery are consistently used across the design. Chris Brown's album features a stern portrait of the artist against a colorful graffiti-style background, focusing on his image over the music itself and appealing to younger audiences. Both album designs utilize consistent typography and imagery that tie into themes and styles of the respective artists.
Director X is a music video director born in Toronto in 1975 who is known for his high-budget, visually distinctive videos for popular artists. He draws on his Trinidadian heritage by incorporating warm colors and natural settings to create moods that engage audiences.
The group will create a music video for the song "I Want You" by Common ft. Will.i.am. They plan to add elements of urban street culture to deviate from the original video. Their target audience will be people aged 18-28 interested in R&B and hip hop who can relate to the song's theme of missing an ex-lover. Key elements of the video will include flashbacks in black and white of the main character reminiscing about his ex-girlfriend after seeing her again. Shooting locations will include central London and a park to capture the romantic atmosphere. Costumes, lighting, and camera angles will aim to fit the R&B and hip hop genres.
The document summarizes the results of a questionnaire given to 20 random people to understand their music preferences. It found that 60% of respondents were aged 15-18, and of those 40% preferred R&B music. Therefore, the target audience for the music video is 15-18 year olds who prefer R&B. To further understand this audience, the creator will analyze popular R&B music videos.
The document discusses choosing the song "Don't Wake Me Up" by Chris Brown for a music video project. It notes that the simple lyrics and catchy electric beat provide opportunities to use various editing techniques. It also suggests creating an abstract video to allow more creativity, with easier lip syncing due to fewer lyrics and a focus on footage and editing to match the rhythm. The concept of dreams provides random footage and narrative flexibility.

1. Evaluation task 1 (Jerome Blake)
In what ways does your media product
use, develop, or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Our media products
• Our three media products are as follows
• A music video
• A magazine advertisement
• And a DigiPak
Our media products fit into the Hip hop and R&B
genre of music and because of this there are unique
codes and conventions that must be followed in
order to make our media product interact with our
targeted audience.
3. Conventions of a music video (R&B)
Men in R&B/Hip-hop Women in R&B/Hip-hop
• Jeans • Minimal clothing
• Tattoos • Hair and make up
• Jewelry • Heels
• Topless (occasionally) • jewelry
R&B/Hip-hop music videos are generically very sexual,
more specifically when it comes to the way women are
represented, this is not always the case as there are several
examples of R&B/ hop-hop music videos that challenge this
convention and are still successful as a music video an
example of this is “Miss Independent” by Ne-you. The
screen shots are from the music video to illustrate what I
am explaining.
4. Different Types of R&B/Hip-hop
representations representations
Women
• Similar to males in the R&B genre, females in R&B also convey their sexuality through their clothing which is very
minimal as mentioned in the previous slide; they also place emphasis on their sexuality through their makeup. R&B
females are usually portrayed as soft goddess type people in their videos, but nowadays there has been a lot of
gender stereotypes being broken in their videos with the females being seen as more powerful than the men for
example Ciara’s “like a boy” video.
Ciara - like a boy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CQEvlil68M&ob=av2e
To add to this there is also the typical representation of women in R&B/Hip-hop music videos where women are
represented as disposable objects of desire, which our video challenges.
Men
• R&B videos are usually very sexual and the topless men in the male R&B videos connotes that sense of
sexuality. A majority of R&B videos these days are filmed in grey scale/sepia tone which adds a sensual
tone to the imagery in the video. R&B male stars wear jewellery however not as much as Hip Hop stars do
because although they are trying to depict their wealth, a majority of the video will have close ups on
their bodies and abs.
Trey Songz – Can’t be friends:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArdBI_F1LKo
• This is also challenged in some hip-hop/R&B videos where the male is fully clothed with minimal jewellery
but in contemporary and stylish clothing examples of this are.
Lupe Fiasco ft. Trey Songz outa my head
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3NaVE73lpc
And
Neyo miss independant
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6M5C-oKw9k
5. Clothing (Mise-en-scene)
• Our music video uses the forms and conventions of real
media products in a variety of ways below are some
examples of real media products in comparison to ours
Our media product Real media products
Various aspects of our video were influenced by real media products, for the representation we
wanted “Lupe Fiasco ft. Trey songz outa my head” was a big influence. As it challenged the typical
conventions of R&B/Hip-hop E.g. topless males
6. Setting the mood (lighting )
Our media product Real media products
Notice the similarities between our music video and real music videos, there are various elements that make our
video relate to our target audience and this is using the conventions of hip-hop and R&B in this instance, our
artist wears jewelry and black clothes; the artist in the video “stay Scheming” wears jewellery and black clothing.
Giving our music video a darker feel relating it to the hip-hop genre of music, as hip hop extends from
underground rap which consist of references to, sex, drug abuse, gang culture and violence.
7. special effects (editing)
Our media product Real media products
We used Final Cut pro to edit our video and it allowed us to use “keyer” and
other techniques in order to create colorful backgrounds, vibrant
backgrounds are used in R&B videos occasionally but not so much in
contemporary R&B the reason we used this is because it added depth and
dynamism to our video.
Bring our media product in closer relation to our target audience. Colorful
lighting techniques are used in a variety of videos such as Usher “Yeah ft.
Ludacris” which was a number one hit single for weeks on end.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqr_4NCfitM
8. Variety of shots (camera angles)
1
The camera angles we have used are a
worms eye view, low angle shot. In some
performance scenes as shown in image 1
because this is an effective camera angle
used in many hip-hop and R&B videos
The use of camera angles were key to the production of our music video using them
made our product look authentic in particular the scenes where we would change
scenes quickly showing different angles.
We also used over the
shoulder shots as shown in
image 2 and we consistently
used it through out our video
as it allows the audience to
see what's going on from the
perspective of the artist or
supporting actors.
9. On beat editing
In order to intricately relate our media product to our target audience. We cut and placed
our footage over key sections of the song. Not only did this allow for very tight lip syncing
but it allowed us to used different editing techniques, such as cross cuts and continuity
editing. Which is a feature that is apparent in the production of real media products (music
videos)
Look at this examples where cuts are used to match the beat as well as used for lip
syncing, this video was key in terms of influencing how and where we cut and placed our
scenes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liZm1im2erU
10. Connotations behind key scenes
This scene is of our actress wearing red
heals and the connotation behind this is
love and sophistication which is a key
concept of the R&B music genre
The cold steel effect along with
the over the shoulder shot
gives the scene a depressing
mood which is the message we
are trying to convey through
our narrative structure this is
done on several music video
e.g. bright sunshine is used to
connote love and happiness
11. Connotations behind key scenes
We used natural lighting in this shot as a bright sunny day between boy and
girl together denotes love and affection in particular when both are smiling at
each other.
This is an example of a real
media product that uses
similar lighting to convey the
same meaning “Lupe Fiasco ft.
Trey songz outa my head”
12. Connotations behind key scenes
We used the camera angle and the dynamic action pose in order to relate to the R&B
music genre where there are very short performance scenes performance scenes are a
must when it comes to R&B music videos. So we decided to use this convention to
bring our media product in closer relation to real media products and our targeted
audience.
13. Connotations behind key scenes
Not only did we edit to the
beat but we also edited to the
lyrics as well we done several
things such as add text to
physically display the words of
the song in key places we feel
this was one of our more
creative techniques we used in
order to have a closer
relationship with the genre we
also used abstract footage in
places such as the sky when
the song makes reference to it.
14. Representation of women in our video
• Our representation of women challenges the forms and conventions of Hip-Hop
and R&B music videos by having a fetishtic representation of our female actress
we have done so by use of the clothing she wears in comparison to real media
products which portray their women in a voyeuristic was.
• Laura muvleys male gaze was key to the representation of women in our music
video and a key influence in inspiring us to challenge this convention. As Laura
Mulvey’s theory brings to attention the negative representation of women in the
media generally being given a voyeuristic representation which is degrading, so we
decided to challenge this representation and this theory made it apparent to us
the ways in which women are portrayed in real contemporary media products
15. Andrew Goodwin
• Andrew Goodwin identifies 5 key aspects of music videos that audiences should look for which are.
• Thought beats-seeing the sound
• Narrative and performance
• The star image
• Relation of visuals to song
• Technical aspects of music video.
Andrew Goodwin's theory on music videos was key to the construction of our music videos.
His theory made me consciously aware of the elements that had to be included in my music video for it to be successful.
Taking his theory into account we cut and pasted the footage not only
to match the beat of the song but the lyrics as well for instance in our
song the lyric “thoughts take me to when we were close” there is an
extreme close up of male actor 1 and female actress holding hands.
16. Andrew Goodwin
• We also had to take into consideration the star image of the artists in the original
song, common is a laid back person, who raps and is typical of the rap/hip-hop genre.
• Will-I-Am is more out going and daring with his dress sense which is why male actor 2 (me)
was in more stylized clothing to fit the star image of will I am.
As you can see from the two
images there is a clear
contrast in representation
between both male actors.
17. Andrew Goodwin
• Narrative structure and performance are key
and clear to see thoughout the entire of our
music video these elements are the spine of
the video and without them our video would
not be as successful as it is as it adds context
and meaning to the song.
18. Our DigiPak
The key and apparent use
of Red in our DigiPak is to
connote love. Love is a key
theme in Hip-hop and R&B
so we used images that we
had to depict upon that
theme.
As you can see the similarities
between our media product
and a real media product, but
our DigiPak is uniquely styled
to represent our target
audience and music genre
19. Our DigiPak front cover
Our media product
Our DigiPak front cover in terms of
design style is influenced by “the

23. Conclusion (music video)
How we used conventions
• So in conclusion we have used the conventions of real media products when creating ours by using key
themes of the genre, such as.
• urbanization (using urban backgrounds)
• By using clothing hat connoted meaning which signifies the genre e.g. Jewelry (the Mise- en-scene)
• By having a variety of scenes representing the artist in different clothing and angles (Camera angles )
• Using a variety of special effects e.g. using the keyer to have different backgrounds (editing)
• Adding special filter effects such as, Crisp contrast and cold steel to make key scenes from our video look
similar to real media products (lighting)
How we challenged conventions
• Having our Actress completely covered in clothing representing her in a Fetishtic way in term of her facial
expressions body language and dress since.
• We also challenged the male representation to by not having our R&B actor (male actor 2- Jay –S) not take
off his top, there for de sexualizing the music video making the viewer pay more attention to the narrative
structure of the video rather that nudity which is seen in many hip-hop and R&B videos
• These are some examples of sexualized Hip-hop and R&B videos.
• 50 cent ft. Olivia candy shop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRcnnId15BA
• Ciara ft 50 cent can leave e’m alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnL9Ju7oSvU
24. Conclusion (DigiPak)
Our DigiPak used conventions of real media products in terms of its.
• Structure: gatefold structure follows conventions of real media
products, additional panels develops that convention to allow for
more promotional material to be contained in the DigiPak.
• Imagry: couple togather denotes love, facial expressions of

• Our DigiPak uses conventions of real media products in
terms of its color scheme and typographic style being
the same as the DigiPak showing that they are linked as
a media package; this also has a direct ink with the
theme of love that is apparent in R&B/hip hop music.
• The use of real music logos such as hmv and iTunes
helps to make the advert look authentic as well as
helping to promote the artist and the song, making the
audience know how to access the song and the various
ways they can access it.
