Introduction
Container’s transport over the world plays a major logistics role in the
contemporary global economy. Seaports and their container terminals
represent an important function in the logistics chain. Quay gantry cranes
served as one of the essential elements of the transshipment containers in
the container terminal.
These cranes are found at container terminals, a place where containers are
handled from one of the transports (container vessel, feeder vessel etc.) to
the other (chassis, automated guided vehicle), and vice versa.
What is Quay Gantry Crane?
Quay gantry cranes consist of a
supporting framework that can
traverse the length of a quay or
yard on a rail track. Instead of a
hook, they are equipped with a
specialized handling tool called
a spreader.
QCs are also known as ship-to-
shore cranes(STS Crane).
Basic Operation of QGC
Loading and unloading operations
with containers from/to container
vessels are performed in the
quayside area by quay gantry
cranes(QGCs).
Basic two operations of QG cranes:
• Unloading
• Loading
Basic Operations of QGC
Unloading
• the stevedores remove the container lashing and the twist locks. Then as per the
cargo plan, the selected container is discharged by a gantry crane.
• The spreader is lowered on top of the container, and it locks the four corners
(corner castings) by a twist lock mechanism.
• Now the operator lifts the container and uses the transverse motion of the
spreader to remove the container from the ship and load it over the truck in the
shore platform.
• The gantry operator can lift up to 4 containers at a time, depending upon the
type of gantry and size of containers.
Basic Operations of QGC
Loading
• The loading of the container is done one by one as per the cargo plan, keeping
the ship stability in mind.
• Normally truck and trailers bring the containers from the storage point to the
gantry and spreader picks the container and loads it on the ship.
• Only one container is grabbed by the gantry crane for loading purpose as more
precision is require to load the container, and aligning the hold guide and other
containers.
• The lifting capacity of gantry cranes may differ for different manufactures and this
depends upon the size of the crane. The safe load lifting capacity is displayed
clearly in the gantry structure.
The power source for gantry crane is from the shore electrical power supply or from diesel
generator attached to the framework. Normally A.C shore power supply is used which may vary
from 4000 to 13500 volts.

QG Crane’s Classification
The first possible category is a classification according to the size of container vessel.
• Panamax QGC: Able to transship vessels with 11-13 containers wide (rows) or more
and with an outreach 30-40m, capable of passing through Panama Canal.
• Post-Panamax QGC: Able to transship vessels with 17-19 containers wide or more
and with an outreach 45-55m.
• Super Post-Panamax QGC: Able to transship vessels with 21-23 containers wide
and with an outreach 60-70 m.
QG Crane’s Classification
QGCs are further classified by the
boom mechanization:
• High profile (A-Frame):
With tip-up boom above the
water surface and prove of vessel
anchor. This profile exhibits the
lowest cost and the lowest wheel
loads.
QG Crane’s Classification
Low profile:
Where the boom is able either to
push forwards or to push in above
vessel. These QCs are suitable
especially for their minimum
height near airports and for
reduced visual impact. This profile
exhibits higher costs and higher
wheel loads.
Types of Trolley
The QC trolley selection has to be based on the needs of a particular location, as
well as the crane structure and the wheel loads.
• Rope trolley:
• Machinery trolley
Trolley Comparison Matrix (General)
MT: Machinery Trolley, RT: Rope Trolley
Hoisting Mechanism
QGCs can also feature-
• A single: Conventional QCs have a single hoist with a single spreader for a rated load of up to 65 t.
QGC with a single hoist picks up either a single 20ʹ, 40ʹ, 45ʹ or two 20ʹ (twin 20s) containers, under
a single spreader.
• Dual hoist: This type QGC includes two hoisting systems on the main trolley and can handle either
two 40ʹ or four 20ʹ containers for each lift.
The most significant differences between the dual hoist QCs and single hoist(conventional) QCs
are:
 Dual hoist QCs are heavier and have bigger wheel loads.
 Dual hoist QCs have larger trolleys, twice as many sheaves, and headblock stowage accommodations.
 Dual hoist QCs have two main hoist systems, two headblocks and conventional spreaders and sets of
falls.
 Dual hoist QCs are equipped with ancillary devices to help the operator.

Types of Spreader
There are also QGCs equipped with a hoist with a tandem. This could double productivity against
the conventional single hoist.
Tandem means side by side, as opposed to end-to-end twin lifts.
This arrangement can be done with the help of various types of Spreader.

  • 3. Introduction Container’s transport over the world plays a major logistics role in the contemporary global economy. Seaports and their container terminals represent an important function in the logistics chain. Quay gantry cranes served as one of the essential elements of the transshipment containers in the container terminal. These cranes are found at container terminals, a place where containers are handled from one of the transports (container vessel, feeder vessel etc.) to the other (chassis, automated guided vehicle), and vice versa.
  • 4. What is Quay Gantry Crane? Quay gantry cranes consist of a supporting framework that can traverse the length of a quay or yard on a rail track. Instead of a hook, they are equipped with a specialized handling tool called a spreader. QCs are also known as ship-to- shore cranes(STS Crane).
  • 5. Basic Operation of QGC Loading and unloading operations with containers from/to container vessels are performed in the quayside area by quay gantry cranes(QGCs). Basic two operations of QG cranes: • Unloading • Loading
  • 6. Basic Operations of QGC Unloading • the stevedores remove the container lashing and the twist locks. Then as per the cargo plan, the selected container is discharged by a gantry crane. • The spreader is lowered on top of the container, and it locks the four corners (corner castings) by a twist lock mechanism. • Now the operator lifts the container and uses the transverse motion of the spreader to remove the container from the ship and load it over the truck in the shore platform. • The gantry operator can lift up to 4 containers at a time, depending upon the type of gantry and size of containers.
  • 7. Basic Operations of QGC Loading • The loading of the container is done one by one as per the cargo plan, keeping the ship stability in mind. • Normally truck and trailers bring the containers from the storage point to the gantry and spreader picks the container and loads it on the ship. • Only one container is grabbed by the gantry crane for loading purpose as more precision is require to load the container, and aligning the hold guide and other containers. • The lifting capacity of gantry cranes may differ for different manufactures and this depends upon the size of the crane. The safe load lifting capacity is displayed clearly in the gantry structure. The power source for gantry crane is from the shore electrical power supply or from diesel generator attached to the framework. Normally A.C shore power supply is used which may vary from 4000 to 13500 volts.
  • 8. Main Construction of QGC Boom/Girder Spreader Back Tension bar Machinery house Rail track wheel Forestays/Front tension bar
  • 11. QG Crane’s Classification The first possible category is a classification according to the size of container vessel. • Panamax QGC: Able to transship vessels with 11-13 containers wide (rows) or more and with an outreach 30-40m, capable of passing through Panama Canal. • Post-Panamax QGC: Able to transship vessels with 17-19 containers wide or more and with an outreach 45-55m. • Super Post-Panamax QGC: Able to transship vessels with 21-23 containers wide and with an outreach 60-70 m.
  • 12. QG Crane’s Classification QGCs are further classified by the boom mechanization: • High profile (A-Frame): With tip-up boom above the water surface and prove of vessel anchor. This profile exhibits the lowest cost and the lowest wheel loads.
  • 13. QG Crane’s Classification Low profile: Where the boom is able either to push forwards or to push in above vessel. These QCs are suitable especially for their minimum height near airports and for reduced visual impact. This profile exhibits higher costs and higher wheel loads.
  • 14. Types of Trolley The QC trolley selection has to be based on the needs of a particular location, as well as the crane structure and the wheel loads. • Rope trolley: • Machinery trolley Trolley Comparison Matrix (General) MT: Machinery Trolley, RT: Rope Trolley
  • 15. Hoisting Mechanism QGCs can also feature- • A single: Conventional QCs have a single hoist with a single spreader for a rated load of up to 65 t. QGC with a single hoist picks up either a single 20ʹ, 40ʹ, 45ʹ or two 20ʹ (twin 20s) containers, under a single spreader. • Dual hoist: This type QGC includes two hoisting systems on the main trolley and can handle either two 40ʹ or four 20ʹ containers for each lift. The most significant differences between the dual hoist QCs and single hoist(conventional) QCs are:  Dual hoist QCs are heavier and have bigger wheel loads.  Dual hoist QCs have larger trolleys, twice as many sheaves, and headblock stowage accommodations.  Dual hoist QCs have two main hoist systems, two headblocks and conventional spreaders and sets of falls.  Dual hoist QCs are equipped with ancillary devices to help the operator.

  • 17. Types of Spreader There are also QGCs equipped with a hoist with a tandem. This could double productivity against the conventional single hoist. Tandem means side by side, as opposed to end-to-end twin lifts. This arrangement can be done with the help of various types of Spreader. Conventional and Tandem arrangements of Containers
