There is not one model for the delivery of quality and effective substance use disorders treatment and recovery support services in rural areas. However, there are themes emerging from the scientific literature as well as from rural treatment providers implementing new services. These themes/strategies include: use of technology and web-based services; offering recovery support services by telephone or web-based portal systems without initial substance abuse treatment services; and providing flexible service delivery, integrated care, and Project ECHO-like models. Most importantly, a successful substance abuse treatment model for rural areas does not include just one intervention, but rather a combination of the interventions that fit the community and the patient population. Technology offers one more avenue by which behavioral health professionals can support patients’ recovery, thereby increasing recovery participation and decreasing the likelihood of relapse. This presentation focuses on how the reach of recovery support services can be extended through the use of technologies (e.g., the web, social media, smartphone apps, and cell phone), which is especially important for individuals residing in rural/frontier areas with limited access to services. Thus, expanding access to recovery support services through the use of technologies can help individuals achieve positive health outcomes.

Pareto analysis

Kwazi Mbatha, a CEGAA Researcher/Trainer for the BMET project,was joined by a member of TAC’s uMgungundlovu District community mobilisation team to discuss challenges and opportunities for HIV/AIDS and TB budget monitoring at local levels in South Africa. Relating primarily to CEGAA’s Budget Monitoring and Expenditure (BMET) project, conducted in partnership with the Treatment Action Campaign and entitled "Giving power to the community: Community monitoring of HIV/AIDS and TB spending in two districts in South Africa", this project worked towards increasing the delivery, accessibility, affordability and quality of treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS and TB, thus ensuring that ARVs and TB treatments are available as life-saving and prevention mechanisms. The pilot and secondary phase of the project sought to achieve the above by empowering communities and citizens towards a common understanding of health care delivery and budget issues and collaborative corrective action for optimal health care services at local level.

Dementia state plan and innovations in caregiver support and dementia care
This document summarizes Virginia's efforts to support caregivers of individuals with dementia through the FAMILIES program. The creation of community health promotion and education programs takes into consideration several agencies or parties who help in the achievement of the desired health goals. Each of the partners will address its roles using different approaches depending on their area of expertise. This is an important factor to consider as different institutions address health promotion using different approaches and perspectives. The overall outcome from the contribution of every partner should be able to restore and promote the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and social wellness of the community in relation to the health issue being suffered (Minelli, & Breckon, 2009). Chronic diseases are currently the leading causes of death in the community due to their complexity and the severe effects on human health. The community health promotion and education program will be provided by the ‘Health Concerns Coalition’ which will be made up of the following partners; community religious groups, Cancer Supportive Care Foundation, an association of cancer-survivor patients, nutritional organizations, and the local authority.
1. Cancer Supportive Care Foundation – This is an important part of the coalition as it will offer technical expertise in education and diagnosis of chronic diseases. The foundation team will include medical experts who will diagnose the community members of any chronic illnesses. Examinations for diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and blood pressure will be conducted by this partner as they will provide modern machines needed for the diagnosis of chronic illnesses.

AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

Offered training grants to hospitals in those regions, specifically related to programs addressing healthy lifestyle/disease management offerings. Application process as well as follow-up to receive funding up to $750 per applicant. First invitation to participate - December 2010.
