TARGET AUDIENCE: Male and Female, aged 16-25,
working class and middle class
Skins has a similar target audience to our group’s soap
trailer because they target a younger audience through the
use of younger actors and the use of a male gaze (Laura
Mulvey) and a female gaze (Diana Sacco). This attracts their
target audience because viewers feel that they can
‘personally relate’ (Katz) and personally identify’ (Katz)
themselves with the characters and this therefore makes
viewers want to watch Skins. A male gaze (Mulvey) and
female gaze (Sacco) is something which I would like to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) in my own trailer because it will
attract a wider range of younger viewers.

2. Waterloo Road also has a similar target audience to our
group’s soap trailer as they target a younger audience
through the location of the TV drama series, as it is set in a
school. The location of a school is instantly relatable to many
teenagers and young adults who may still go to school or
have recently left, therefore, viewers will be able to
‘personally identify’ (Katz) themselves with the characters.
Glue has a similar target audience to our group’s soap opera
as they are a teen drama series and portrays this through
the use of a young cast. It is also shown on the channel E4,
which is stereotypically, a channel for younger viewers,
which also supports how they are targeting a young
audience. Viewers may be able to ‘personally relate’ (Katz)
to the characters in Glue because they may have been in a
similar situation as them and therefore, caregivers (Maslow)
may feel sympathy towards them.
