Frogs belong to the class of amphibians, which evolved from fish around 270 million years ago. Amphibians include frogs, toads, newts, salamanders and caecilians. Frogs are cold-blooded and have soft skin, beginning life as larvae in water before metamorphosing into adults on land. Australia has approximately 219 frog species, over 90% of which are unique to Australia. However, at least 12 Australian frog species have gone extinct in the last 40 years, with 47 more considered threatened.
