Facts on Endangered Species An endangered species is a specie, plant or animal, that is in immediate danger of becoming extinct. Its numbers are usually low and it needs protection in order to survive. The Siberian tiger, the southern sea otter, the snow leopard, the green pitcher plant, and thousands of other plants and animals are endangered worldwide. There are 38 million acres lost per year in tropical rainforests. Up to one half of the world’s species live in these areas. The rate of extinction is 1 species every 100 years In North America alone, there are 500 species that have disappeared in the last 400 years The total number of species facing extinction in 2004, according to IUCN’s Red List of Threatened species in 15 589. These include 1 in 3 amphibians, half of freshwater turtles, 1 in 8 birds and 1 in 4 mammals.
