Laura Mulvey developed the male gaze theory to analyze how women are portrayed in media through the perspective of the male viewer. She argues that women are often presented as sexual objects through camera techniques like shot types and movement that emphasize their physical form. Mulvey also examined how these objectifying portrayals influence how women see themselves and each other. Examples of popular music videos from the time were analyzed and found to reflect Mulvey's theory through their sexualized depictions of women designed to please the male gaze.
