Creative Writing Section. This is for
Communication and organisation.

Engaging
Ideas are connected
Paragraphs & discourse markers
You are communicating in a way that your reader
can understand.
You are using language to create atmosphere
Your vocabulary is extensive & ambitious.
You are using language features on purpose to
create specific effects.
The devices are varied & effective, eg:
flashback/forward, zoom in /out
You are keeping the reader interested using
details.
Your writing ‘flows’ and all aspects are linked
together.
Your paragraphs are varied lengths, at
appropriate times, directing the reader through
your writing.

Wide range of punctuation
Sentence forms
Standard English
Grammar
Spelling
Vocabulary
You are ending sentences with punctuation, and
using capital letters.
You are using a wide range of punctuation
correctly
. , ? ! ( ) - … ‘ “-” : ;
You are using a variety of sentence types &
structures:
Short = drama
Long = description
Statement / question / imperative / exclamation
You are not swearing or using slang.
Your grammar is correct, especially subject/verb
agreement.
Your spelling of common words is secure.
You can use (and spell) a variety of words.
Confused? Don’t worry!
While considering the previous slides, make a
note of any words or terms that you feel you
would like explaining further.
So what is the purpose?
 Imaginative and unique – “showing, not telling”
 Makes the reader imagine they are experiencing the text.
 To show the reader the mood of the text.
 To appeal to the senses of the reader.
 To entertain the reader.
Showing not telling
Showing rather than telling allows the reader to experience the writing through
action, senses, thoughts and feelings.
Jordan ran straight out in to the road.
This sentence is TELLING. It is quite boring and does not provide the reader
with much information. It is more difficult for the reader to relate
Carelessly chasing a football, Jordan sprinted into the hustle and bustle of
the noisy high street
This sentence is SHOWING. It uses imagery and senses to allow the reader to
experience the situation.
Task one – Show don’t tell
Complete the work sheet
1) Identify which of the sentences are showing and which
are telling.
2) Write your own ‘showing’ sentences.
Identifying mood in texts
Mood can be created by

Task Two - Emotions
On a blank document, write some of your own sentences to
show the following emotions.
 Sadness
 Disgust
 Anger
 Embarrassment
Task Three - Mood
Read the extracts provided
Answer the questions that follow
Stretch and Challenge: can you rewrite one of the extracts to change
the mood?
Plenary
 Which areas of Creative Writing do you find the most
straight forward?
 Which areas of Creative Writing do you find the most
difficult?

Purpose of creative writing

  • 1. Purpose of Creative Writing A05 A06
  • 2. Warmer: Why write creatively? Brainstorm as many reasons as you can in 2 minutes!
  • 3. Let’s have a look at the mark scheme for the Creative Writing Section. This is for Communication and organisation. AO5 Communication & Organisation Clear / convincing communication Tone, Style & Register Vocabulary Linguistic Devices Structural Features Engaging Ideas are connected Paragraphs & discourse markers You are communicating in a way that your reader can understand. You are using language to create atmosphere Your vocabulary is extensive & ambitious. You are using language features on purpose to create specific effects. The devices are varied & effective, eg: flashback/forward, zoom in /out You are keeping the reader interested using details. Your writing ‘flows’ and all aspects are linked together. Your paragraphs are varied lengths, at appropriate times, directing the reader through your writing.
  • 4. Here is the mark scheme for Technical Accuracy AO6 Technical Accuracy Sentence demarcation Wide range of punctuation Sentence forms Standard English Grammar Spelling Vocabulary You are ending sentences with punctuation, and using capital letters. You are using a wide range of punctuation correctly . , ? ! ( ) - … ‘ “-” : ; You are using a variety of sentence types & structures: Short = drama Long = description Statement / question / imperative / exclamation You are not swearing or using slang. Your grammar is correct, especially subject/verb agreement. Your spelling of common words is secure. You can use (and spell) a variety of words.
  • 5. Confused? Don’t worry! While considering the previous slides, make a note of any words or terms that you feel you would like explaining further.
  • 6. So what is the purpose?  Imaginative and unique – “showing, not telling”  Makes the reader imagine they are experiencing the text.  To show the reader the mood of the text.  To appeal to the senses of the reader.  To entertain the reader.
  • 7. Showing not telling Showing rather than telling allows the reader to experience the writing through action, senses, thoughts and feelings. Jordan ran straight out in to the road. This sentence is TELLING. It is quite boring and does not provide the reader with much information. It is more difficult for the reader to relate Carelessly chasing a football, Jordan sprinted into the hustle and bustle of the noisy high street This sentence is SHOWING. It uses imagery and senses to allow the reader to experience the situation.
  • 8. Task one – Show don’t tell Complete the work sheet 1) Identify which of the sentences are showing and which are telling. 2) Write your own ‘showing’ sentences.
  • 9. Identifying mood in texts Mood can be created by  Setting  Imagery  Language choices  Tone
  • 11. Task Two - Emotions On a blank document, write some of your own sentences to show the following emotions.  Sadness  Disgust  Anger  Embarrassment
  • 12. Task Three - Mood Read the extracts provided Answer the questions that follow Stretch and Challenge: can you rewrite one of the extracts to change the mood?
  • 13. Plenary  Which areas of Creative Writing do you find the most straight forward?  Which areas of Creative Writing do you find the most difficult?  Please submit your work to me via email for feedback :)
