Introduction
The Literature of the Seventeenth Century may be
divided into two periods—The Puritan Age or the Age
of Milton (1600-1660), which is further divided inTo
the Jacobean and Caroline periods after the names of
the ruled James I and Charles I, who rules from 1603 to
1625 and 1625 to 1649 respectively; and the Restoration
Period or the Age of Dryden (1660-1700).
Jacobean Era
The Jacobean era was the period in English
and Scottish history that coincides wi th the reign of James VI
of Scotland who also inherited the crown of England in 1603 as
James I. The Jacobean era succeeds the Elizabethan era and
precedes the Caroline era. The term "Jacobean" is often used
for the distinctive styles of Jacobean architecture, visual arts,
decorative arts, and literature which characterized that period.
The Caroline Era
The Caroline era refers to the
period in English and Scottish
history named for the 24-year
reign of Charles I (1625–1649).
