The pulmonary system begins with the pharynx and larynx, leading to the trachea or windpipe. The trachea branches into bronchi tubes that lead to each lung, which further divide into bronchioles and clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Surrounding the alveoli are capillaries where red blood cells pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide as they pass through, allowing for gas exchange.
