Public speaking can take several forms and serve different purposes. There are four main types of speeches: informative speeches aim to impart information to audiences; persuasive speeches try to influence audiences' opinions; speeches meant to actuate aim to motivate action; and entertaining speeches amuse audiences. Speeches typically aim to inform, enlighten, persuade, impress, actuate or entertain audiences. When delivering a speech, a speaker can rely on a manuscript and read their speech word-for-word, fully memorize the speech, prepare impromptu with little time, or use notes to speak extemporaneously in a natural conversational tone.
