INTRODUCTION
We were assigned to groups of fours for this assignment, and were told to make
a video clip consisting of the concepts we have learned throughout the semester.
The assignment given were split into two parts ;
For the first part of the assignment, students were required to shoot a 3-5
minute social psychology conceptual video, integrating what we have learnt
throughout the semester. There must be at least five social psychology theories
in the video and afterwards students are also required to present the video in
class. For the second part of the assignment, students were required to do a
report that basically explains the content and reflection of the video assignment.
The purpose of this assignment is to ensure that students fully understand all the
social psychology theories and concepts learnt in class, also to ensure that
students know how to apply these theories in real life.
METHOD
We did research by browsing through the internet to look for inspiration of a
simple yet straightforward video that would spread our message across. We then
found an advertisement titled “Children See, Children Do” which talks about how
parents actions can influence their children.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHi2dxSf9hw) . We then listed down all the
social psychology concepts related to the video and started to make our own
version of the ad.
SUMMARY
The story revolves around the life of a father and his kid, showing every action
he does that affects his kid directly. The video has been split into several parts ;
a) The first scene shows the father and his kid eating lunch. He then took his
phone and started replying to texts while eating. His kid copies his exact
action and does the same thing.
b) The second scene shows the father drinking a bottle of water and then
littering on the grass. His kid copies his exact action and does the same
thing.
c) The third scene shows the father being cruel towards a pink bear. His kid
copies his action and joins him.
d) The fourth scene shows the father yelling at his wife and beating her up.
His kid observes from far, copies his actions and joins him beating his
wife.
e) The fifth scene shows the father being stressed out and starts to light up a
cigarette. His kid copies his exact action and does the same thing.
f) The sixth scene shows the father vandalizing public property. His kid
copies his exact action and does the same thing.
g) The seventh scene shows the father yelling at a muslim worker and
making rude, racist remarks at her. His kid copies his actions and joins
him saying all those sensitive comments.
h) The eighth and final scene shows the father helping out a lady who
dropped her stuff. His kid saw him doing the good deed and starts doing
the same thing.
The video concludes that children learn from observation and at a small age, they
cant tell whats right and wrong. If parents set up bad examples towards them,
chances are they would grow up with negative behaviors. If parents set good
examples, chances are they would grow up with positive behaviors.
CONCEPTS
1. Observational Learning is a concept brought up by Albert Bandura. It
basically talks about the learning process that occurs through
observation. This type of learning process requires a model (parents,
teachers, siblings, etc) but in childhood, a model is generally someone
older, someone they look up to or someone of a higher status. Many of
these learning outcomes happen unintentionally. Children observe how
their models act on a day to day basis and simply copy what they do,
without evaluating which behavior is right or wrong. That’s why, in cases
that involve aggression in children, parents are usually the one to blame.
2. Social Influence occurs when one’s behavior, emotions, thoughts and
beliefs are influenced by others. A persons character is greatly shaped
and affected by how they were raised, and the environment they are in. A
person who was raised in a conservative country probably have a higher
chance of believing in God, or a religion- because of the surrounding
environment that strongly believes in the presence of God and religion.
3. Aggression is a social interaction that often inflicts harm/damage upon
the other person. Aggression can be either physical or verbal, direct or
indirect. It usually happens because a person wants to express anger or
hostility, to intimidate others, to show dominance or position, to achieve a
goal or to compete. In the video, aggression happens when the father was
being cruel towards the bear, beating up his wife, vandalizing public
property and yelling at the Muslim worker.
4. Racism is the belief that certain races are ranked as superior or inferior
towards each other. It can also be defined as intolerance or hatred
towards other races. In the video, racism happens when the father was
yelling at the Muslim worker and calling her a terrorist. He also told her
that she doesn’t belong in the country.
5. Altruistic motivation is the concept of caring for the welfare of others.
People who practice altruism do things without expecting anything in
return. In the video, altruism can be seen when the father and his kid help
the lady to pick up her things without having any ulterior motive.
SCENES FROM THE VIDEO
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this assignment has helped us a lot in improving our
understanding towards the social psychology concepts that we have learned in
class. We also learned how to apply these concepts in real life. Besides that,
we’ve also improved on out communication skills, organization skills, time
management skills, video editing skills, and acting skills altogether. This has been
an amazing experience that gives us a bit of insight on peoples behaviors and
actions.

  • 8. CONCEPTS 1. Observational Learning is a concept brought up by Albert Bandura. It basically talks about the learning process that occurs through observation. This type of learning process requires a model (parents, teachers, siblings, etc) but in childhood, a model is generally someone older, someone they look up to or someone of a higher status. Many of these learning outcomes happen unintentionally. Children observe how their models act on a day to day basis and simply copy what they do, without evaluating which behavior is right or wrong. That’s why, in cases that involve aggression in children, parents are usually the one to blame. 2. Social Influence occurs when one’s behavior, emotions, thoughts and beliefs are influenced by others.
