Entry 1- Social Loafing
Social loafing is the phenomenon of people exerting less effort to achieve a goal when
they work in a group than when they work alone. Hence, individual effort cannot be identified in
a group. The first research of social loafing began with rope pulling experiments by Max
Ringelmann in 1913. He found that members of a group tended to exert less effort in pulling a
rope than did individuals alone.
A general example: a group of students given a task of working collectively on a paper
for a course. They will receive one grade for the paper. Some of the students do not make much
of an effort working on the group paper even though they made an effort on other assignments in
which they worked alone.
During my secondary school day, I was active in basketball and badminton. I participated
in basketball and badminton tournaments every year. My position in the court was the point
guard. I always be the bench player for the basketball tournament as my teammates was better
than me. I do substitute my teammates whenever there was needed during a match. Every time
we won the tournament because my team performance was great. My individual effort for the
basketball tournament couldn’t be identified compare with man single match of badminton
tournament.

Entry 2 – Self-efficacy
Self-efficacy is the extent or strength of one’s belief in one’s own ability to complete
tasks and reach goals. It defined by the psychologist Albert Bandura in 1977. There are two types
of self-efficacy which are high and low self-efficacy. People with high self-efficacy see the
difficult tasks as challenges while people with low self-efficacy see the difficult tasks as
something to be avoided.
I was a high self-efficacy person. Every time I received tasks that I was not good in it, I
still can finish it with my ability. For example, I was not in additional mathematics. There were a
lot of formulas that I couldn’t understand and memorize easily. My additional math result was
terrible but I don’t give up on it. I sign up for a tuition and done plenty of exercise questions
given by the teacher. I do also think a simplest way to memorized all the formula.
On the other hand, my friend Jacky Lum was a low self-efficacy person. He also has the
same problem as me but he decided to avoid this problem. As he believed he will never get good
result in exam, so he always slept in the classroom while teacher was teaching. Besides, he also
put aside the exercise question given by teacher.

Entry 3 – Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become
true. Example: if we start a day and think “ I’ll have a bad day today.” Such thinking may alter
our actions and the prediction might be fulfilled by our actions.
During my form five final history exam, I expect I couldn’t get a pass in the exam no
matter how hard I try so when I got the exam paper I just simply answered the question and slept.
After the teacher returned my exam paper, I got a fail and my marks not even more than 20.
Another experience, I expect I can get at least 5As in my SPM results. I kept do all the exercise
over and over again before SPM and ended up I get 7As in my results.

Entry 4 - The Halo Effect
The halo effect is a cognitive bias in which an observer’s overall impression of a person,
brand or product influences the observer’s feelings and thoughts about that entity’s character or
properties. It was named by psychologist Edward Thorndike.
During my first day in Taylors, I saw a guy who wear Armani Exchange t shirt with a
black gold G-shock watch and using iphone 6 I assumed he was a very rich person. Besides, I
always dinner at the restaurant which decorated nicely because I believed they has the good
service and the food was delicious.

Entry 5 – Observational Learning
Observational learning is learning that occurs through observing the behavior of others. It
identified by Albert Bandura who is known for the classic Bobo doll experiment in 1961. It is
importance because it may help, especially children, acquire new responses by observing other’s
behavior. This form of learning does not need reinforcement to occur, but instead requires a
model.
Since I get to know a few of the professional NBA player such as Stephen Curry and
Kyrie Irving, I started to learn their skills to improve my own skills. I watched their training
video which uploaded on Youtube and their highlight reply. I learnt Curry’s shooting skill and
the cross-over of Kyrie.
