1. Contrast between two disaster-adventure movies- The Impossible and Into The Storm.
There are thousands of movies in the United States. Many people have several
favourite movies throughout their lifetime. Some people have favourites from each decade.
Though many movies have grabbed my attention, my favourite movie is about disaster. I
have watched those movie such as ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ , ‘2012’, ‘The Impossible’
many times and it never gets old to me. Disaster adventure film is full of exciting and
worrying for the film viewer as it describe the characters how they escape and survive
throughout the terrible situation. For this essay, I am contrasting about two disaster adventure
film which are ‘The Impossible’ directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and ‘Into The Storm’
directed by Steven Quale. There are many differences of these movies in the aspect of the
storylines, theme, message and the ending of the story.
First and foremost, ‘The Impossible ’ and ‘Into The Storm’ show the different
storylines about the natural disaster. In ‘The impossible ’, it described about Henry Bennett
and his family on Christmas holiday at a beach resort in Thailand is torn apart when a deadly
tsunami devastates the area. The film follows the seriously wounded Maria and her eldest son
( Lucas ) as they struggle to safety , not knowing whether her husband and their two younger
sons are dead or alive. In ‘Into The Storm ’, it described the town of Silverton is ravaged by
an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and
deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek
shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that.
These two movies had a completely different storylines with the tsunami and tornado.
Besides, I found out that both movies have the different theme which is kindness and
brave. There are a few scene show the kindness in ‘The Impossible’. An example is Henry
desperately wants to make a phone call to determine the safety of his family and at first is
2. rebuffed by someone whose cell phone is low on power; but a second request is answered and
he can finally make his call. It is a touching scene that reminds audience how important is the
kindness of strangers when one is in dire straits. Another example will be when Maria is
finally found by locals and taken to the hospital, she encourage her son (Lucas) to help
reunite families. Lucas collects names and tries to match them as he scours the crowded
hospital corridors. In ‘Into The Storm’ show the storm chaser towards the tornado without
any fear. For example, Pete as a storm chaser has been attempting to intercept and film
tornadoes using a heavily armored Tornado Intercept Vehicle. Upon learning of a major line
of developing storms, he decide to head for Silverton in hopes of filming tornadoes. The two
different theme can be seen from the both movies.
Furthermore, both of the movies portray different message to the audience. ‘The
Impossible’ delivered a message which is treasure our family. As we don’t know what will
going to happen for the next second in our life. This message was highlighted in the
beginning part of the movie when Henry and his family go on a Christmas holiday in
Thailand but they didn’t expect the tsunami will happen for the next moment. Luckily all of
them survived from the tsunami but Maria lost the connection with her husband and the other
two sons. Next , ‘In The Storm’ delivered a message which is to be contented. This movie
reminds us that we should not bank our happiness on personal success or on passing
pleasures, but that we should look for joy in the things that we tend to take for granted.
Instead of perpetually hoping for something better in the future and pouting through our
“unfair” lives, we should be thankful for the lives we do have, the family we have been given ,
and the love we don’t always deserve. Hence, both movies delivered the different message
even though both of the movies under the same category.
Last but not least, the ending of the both movies also different. For ‘ The Impossible’ ,
it has a happy and sweet ending as the family finally reunited towards the end of the story.
3. Lucas recognizes his father and while searching him out , his siblings hear him calling out in
frustration. Henry learns that Maria is at that location and they reunite. Maris has surgery,
which she survives, and the following day the family boards, for Maris’s further medical
treatment, an ambulance airplane to Singapore arranged by their insurance company. In the
opposite, the ending of ‘Into The Storm’ was completely different. Pete sacrifices himself by
leaving the shelter to move Titus down to the storm grate when the storm is getting near.
Unfortunately Titus’s equipment proves unable to anchor the vehicle to the ground and the
tornado picks up the vehicle. Pete managed observes the eye of the tornado as the vehicle is
lifted above the clouds before it crashes back down to the storm drain. It is clearly seen that
both movies have the different types of ending.
As a conclusion, ‘The Impossible’ and ‘Into The Storm’ under the same genre but do
have the differences. The storylines, theme, message, and the ending can be noticed easily
from both of the movies. These movies created unforgettable memories for the audience and
deserve a high movie ratings.
