1. PSY350 Abnormal Psychology
Answers:
Introduction
In this assignment we will discuss about some paradigms that are discussed in the chapter 2
along with the summary of the other chapter 3 and 4. Along with it a journal reflection of
the chapters taught in the class.
Paradigms
There are 3 paradigms i.e., genetic, neuroscience and cognitive behavioural. Neuroscience
paradigms are associated with the mental disorders linked to aberrant processes in the
brain. Cognitive behavioural paradigms are associated with the cognitive process of
behaviour in different situations.
Summary
Chapter 3- The chapter mainly focuses on identifying the different disorders and its
treatment. It also shows that why and how psychotherapy is important for an individual. It
also mentions that disorders that are classified into DSM-5 and ICD-10 and the answer why
is it so?
Chapter 4- Chapter gives a description of various types of approaches that are required for
researching in psychopathology it includes the case study, correlational methods, etc. There
are also multiple findings on the various studies.
Journal Reflection
Genetic Paradigm- Environment is an important factor for expression of the gene.
Heritability is transferred from the genes which includes the variability in the behaviour
which can be accounted by genetic factors. It is applicable large population of people not for
an individual.
Genetic paradigms include more topics in detail like; molecular genetics, gene-environment
interactions, reciprocal gene environment interactions, etc.
2. Diathesis- stress model- This a model which states the relation between the disorder and
stress. It is also known as the vulnerability stress model. There are three main components
of this model i.e., diathesis, stress and factors affecting these things. For e.g.; If a person is
having some disorder and has stress then the diathesis stress model will show a rise in the
graph and vice versa in other situations.
Cultural and ethnic diversity and assessment- For an assessment is important that the test
should be reliable and valid for the people of all the cultures. This is so because if there will
be a language barrier than it will affect the result of the assessment and hence a proper
diagnosis is not possible.
It is important to avoid the cultural bias and for that if required the procedures should/ can
be changed, should not depend on the global stereotypes.
Neuroscience paradigm- It deals with the various mental disorders and process in the brain.
Neuroscience includes various neurons, neurons have 4 parts i.e., cell body, dendrites, axons
and nerve endings. It also contains neurotransmitters (like, GABA, dopamine, serotonin,
norepinephrine, etc.) along with its functions. It also includes the structure and function of
the brain. Neuroendocrine system is also a part of a neuroscience paradigm.
Case study- It is one of the important approaches in clinical psychology. In this the
researcher records the detailed information about the subject. It is useful for proving the
hypothesis that can be tested through the research that is controlled purely by the
researcher.
